AMERICAN FILM MARKET 1999:
FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION
Some suggestions from our on-line reviewer, Christian Leopold Shea
(For the uninitiated, AFM is the annual marketplace for movies; it's being held at the end of February in Santa Monica. It's for industry professionals, but our other visitors may be interested in some of the films below and may want to keep an eye out for them when they are released.)
The following films or firms may be of interest to visitors to our page who will be attending AFM '99. Except as indicated by the asterisk ( * ), we have not seen these films; suggestions are made according to their casts and/or storylines, based upon opinions expressed to us by e-mail or Guest Book in the past. (And no, we do not have any financial interests in any of these films or companies.)
- 200 Cigarettes*. An all-star ensemble cast of young actors, about to open theatrically in the USA; a full review of it will be posted by AFM's opening. Based on the work print seen last October, it's a terrific film. Lakeshore Int'l; Suite 731.
-
- An American Vampire Story. Stars Trevor Lissauer, a young actor whom we expect to go far despite some of the shlock work he has done in the past. Atmosphere Entertainment; Suite 516.
-
- Boiler Room. In pre-production. Stars Ben Affleck and Giovanni Ribisi, a very much under-rated actor. New Line Cinema; Suite 841.
-
- Bride of Chucky*. A wonderfully funny horror/slasher film starring Jennifer Tilly in an excellent role, along with former soap opera star Nick Stabile. Good Machine International, Suite 709.
-
- Camouflage. Stars Leslie Nielsen and personal favorite Lochlyn Munro. Interlight Pictures; Suite 834.
-
- Deal of a Lifetime. A Faustian comedy co-starring Esteban Louis Powell, another outstanding and under-rated young actor. Tomorrow Film Corp.; Suite 727.
-
- The Faculty*. A very positive review from here. Dimension Films; Suite 831.
-
- Get Real. Stars Ben Silverstone, who was so good in The Browning Version.. Alliance-Atlantis Int'l; Suites 740, etc.
-
- Gods and Monsters*. Outstanding motion picture starring Oscar nominees Sir Ian McKellan and Lynn Redgrave. Regent Entertainment; 7th Floor -- Malibu Room.
-
- J & M Entertainment; Suite 633. Several films starring actors well-liked by visitors to this web site, including Corbin Allred, Jonny Lee Miller, Devon Sawa, Henry Thomas, etc. None of their products have been preveiwed by us yet, but they feature actors well-liked by our visitors.
-
- Miramax Int'l; Suite 831. Among their many offerings is She's All That,* which I fully expect to gross well over US $100,000,000 domestically. Their other offerings include several movies we'll probably review favorably.
-
- Pitch Black. This features Cole Hauser, the last of the Chris O'Donnell/Matthew McConaughey/Matt Damon/Ben Affleck/etc. crew to await big screen success. This reviewer figures that anybody who'd let a starving Ben Affleck sleep on his couch deserves a pay check, so please check this one out; Hauser has been in the background of several outstanding films. Polygram Films International; Suite 444.
-
- Playing By Heart*. Read my review of this ensemble comedy/drama, which is alternately hilariously funny and breath-takingly serious. Intermedia; Suite 554.
-
- Richie Rich's Christmas Wish. It's not certain that our visitors will like this particular film, but it stars David Gallagher of the WB's "7th Heaven," an excellent actor. Saban Int'l; Suites 755, 756, 757.
-
- Simon Magus. This stars Noah Taylor, whom we regard as the real star of Shine, as fully deserving of Oscar consideration as was his co-star, winner Geoffrey Rush. G2 Films; Suite 722.
-
- Tall Lights Fade. This stars Breckin Meyer, an increasingly popular star with our visitors. Motion International; Suite 438.
-
- Two Hands. Stars Heath Ledger, the only saving grace of the dreadful television series "Roar." Ledger has potential and may catch on in the States. Beyond Films; Suite 817.
-
- Virgin Suicides. Stars Danny DeVito and The Faculty's Josh Hartnett, whose debut on the short-lived U.S. version of the "Cracker" television series is currently playing in the States on the Arts & Entertainment Network (A&E). Le Studio Canal +; Suite 745.
