Peter Wingfield

Peter Wingfield
In the Loft

This was truly my favorite Q/A. Peter talked quite slowly (and with that incredible voice), and I had better seats. (So there are better picts and notes). Now give me Peter, Adrian, Jim and I really cant choose between them, yet this still sticks out in my mind as such a cool Q/A.

After the now memorized little intro shpeel is read, Princes of the Universe plays, the elevator door flies up and . . .

He took the mike and said hed woken up that morning with no voice after the concert. "Roger Daltry and Jim Byrnes on stage, how about that!" He settled into a chair and the questions began.

Q: Are you a lurker on the internet?

A: A couple of years ago I was at a friends house and decided to type my name into a search engine to see the number of sites. "It was so disturbing Ive never been back sense!"
My kid brother was online once and entered a chat room using his last name. He ended up having to change his e-mail address.

Q: What do you think would be the perfect role?

A: HL has spoiled me. Its very hard to find something to follow HL with due to the versatility of the role. I mean, Comes a Horseman and Revelations 6:8 would have made strong films, but they were part of a TV show, filmed in 14 days.
I would like to do features. I read scripts and they're kinda dull. Perhaps Ill go back on stage.
"My audition was for 4 days work on a show Id never heard of and its completely changed my life! I dont know whats next."

Q: If you were given the chance to meet a historical figure, who would it be?

A: (he pondered a bit on this one) Roman times are extraordinary to deal with. If you really look at it Mark Antony and Cleopatra were real people.

Q: What do you do to calm or prepare yourself before a scene?

A: (after chuckling a moment) I was on a stage production and my preparation included running 4 miles, drinking two beers and eating a biscuit. Someone told me I should just learn how to act!
I use music a lot. If I know a particularly emotional scene is coming up all prepare a tape of music and listen to it before filming.

Q: Are you interested in writing or directing?

A: It is not a strong desire, but there are a few projects Im very close to. One is this idea about a marathon. In a marathon youre struggling to achieve. I dont quite understand it all. Id like to do a piece about a guy whos running for charity, and he starts to feel his performance in the race is inseparable with the struggle of a child in the infant unit.

Q: How much of you is in Methos? (I love this answer!!!!!!!!!!!)

A: "All of Methos is in me. (pause) um. . .but then thats not true either . . . sometimes he goes off and does things we dont talk about!" Hes transformed from my first idea of him. The writers and I had this weird alchemy. "I dont feel in control of him at all . . . while I suspect he has complete control over me!"

Q: Something about playing the darker Methos

A: Its hard to do. You have to acknowledge a side of you. Desires and actions that are very dark, but its an important journey. You have to understand that id doesnt make them bad, just like an act of charity doesnt make someone good.

Q: Considering the speculation that Methos started the watchers, what would he use to convince someone to join?

A: I believe the Powers that Be that he didnt start the watchers.
"I dont believe everything he says is true, but I believe that[Methoss age] is." I think he figured things about immortals out on his own. "Hes a bright boy!" Didnt you notice that Methos was not bothered by the disk in Finale? "Of course hes not, hes not on it!!!"
As to what Methos would do, just get them drunk.

Q: How hard is it to go between the good and the bad Methos?

A: I quivel on that idea, of him being good or bad. In Comes A Horseman youre never quite sure what die hes on. I have a feeling that if Duncan had lost he would have joined Kronos.

From the right side of the stage Oceana suddenly appeared. She came up and they hugged, and the first words out of her mouth was "I hear that Richies not dead."

Peter: "Let me tell you. Richies dead!! . . .Richies dead again!!!" (mass cheering from the crowd)

Oceana: Actually, I really did have a question. Is true love immortal?

Peter: Well, thats what its all about, isnt it? Life, death, its all about love. (note taker swoons at the ease and grace with giving eloquent responses)

Q: What is your greatest achievement?

A: To shave without bleeding. :-)
It really would be leaving Medical school. It was about acknowledging who I was as opposed to who everyone wanted me to be. I wanted to act, and for a while thought about the possibility of doing both. Then there was that whole tabloid association, Doctors-good, actors-bad. I avoided the decision for 6 years, but when I finally made it, it was easy.
Id like to think. . . I have the opportunity of touching people.

Oceana(who was obviously in as much admiration for Peter as I am): You know, one of the greatest things Peter does is be an authentic person.

Peter: You know, I really loved filming Timeless. The director would film, then hed come over and whisper to both of us separately. It built the intensity as wed each be wondering whats going to be different this time?

Oceana said a few parting words and left.

Q(I think my favorite question): Would you be willing to sprawl?

A: Sprool? (think of his accent)

Q- Yeah, to sprawl?

A: (looks confused until he sees numerous people pointing to the couch) Aaaaaaa, I get it.

He gets this mischievous grin, and with deliberate yet suave moves rises from his chair and lays back upon the couch. (crowd goes wild, flash bulbs make it seem like a mini quickening) He stands and changes sides and poses for a moment, then hopes up with a smile "okay, enough of that."

Q: Are you going to be in the movie?

A: Well, theres no script yet, but Adrian and Christopher Lambert will be in it. The intention is to tie in the series and the movie. There is talk of watchers and Methos being included. "I would like it very much."

Q: What actors have influenced you?

A: (he had a hard time narrowing it down in his head) Pachino-for the breadth of his work, Bob Duvall. I like the commitment of acting.

Q: When you first saw the Comes A Horseman script was it a surprise?

A: "Are you kidding me?" Wed just finished filming for The Messenger. A pretty good show, Richie refusing to listen. . .again. "Someone walks up and says: Have you seen the next script? Youre one of the four horseman of the apocalypse! . . . .How would you feel? (pause for laughter to subside, then simply:) "Yeah, I was surprised."

Q: Are you surprised with the response to Methos?

A: "Do you know the word overwhelmed?" It is so beyond my experience, this whole HL phenomena. "Its completely changed my life. I walk the street in Brisbane and people recognize me. How bizarre is that? People halfway across the world have my face on a T-shirt!"
I was sitting at dinner the other night, and its like were all family. And look at there, at all of you, and how many of you are friends from the internet.

They said it was over, and I felt like it had just began. Such an amazing man. I think what got to me through this whole weekend is that he really understands what perhaps not all of the fans do, and that is the true meaning of HL in so many peoples lives.
