Jimmy Stewart. He has become an American icon. Though he generally played stuttering nice guys, he had the capability to play in gritty dramas. Not only has he gained the reputation as one of the best actors ever to hit Hollywood, this Oscar-winning legend is also famous for being one of the best-liked actors in history.
James Maitland Stewart was born on May 20th, 1908 in Indiana, Pennsylvania. He grew up quickly, passing the time with friends, family, and by playing the accordian. In fact, he was so close to his family, he went to his father's alma mater, Princeton. But Jimmy caught the acting bug. When he went to California, he roomed with actor Henry Fonda, who became a life-long friend.
Jimmy and Frank Capra:
Jimmy's first big movie with director Frank Capra was 1938's "You Can't Take it With You", which featured an all-star cast including Jean Arthur, Lionel Barrymore, and Edward Arnold. This delightful comedy was nominated for 7 Oscars, and won two, for Best Picture and Best Director.
"Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"
In 1939, Stewart starred in the fantastic movie, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." It's the story of a naive young senator, Jefferson Smith, appointed because of his supposed stupidity. But Jeff proves to be an intelligent, patriotic individual who will risk anything for what he believes in. "Mr. Smith" also stars Jean Arthur, Claude Rains, Beulah Bondi, Harry Carey, and Edward Arnold. It was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and won one for Best Writing. It also marked a turning point for Jimmy. He was nominated for his first Best Actor Oscar, but lost to Robert Donat for "Goodbye, Mr. Chips." Despite the loss, Jimmy was now a star. Also, I think it's his best performance. This is not to be missed!!
