Elizabeth's Gene Tierney Page 2

In 1946, Gene starred in "The Razor's Edge", which co-starred Tyrone Power, Anne Baxter, and John Payne. It also starred her "Laura" co-star, Clifton Webb. The film was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture. But it only won the Best Supporting Actress statuette, which went to Anne Baxter. In 1947, Gene starred in one of my favorite movies, "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir". Gene played Lucy Muir, the young widow who moves into a small cottage by the sea which is haunted by its former owner, Captain Daniel Gregg. Daniel and Lucy develop a friendship that soon develops into a romance, but as you can imagine, they can't do anything about it because he is dead. But the movie is really beautiful, and a must-see!!~ The movie also stars Rex Harrison, who plays Daniel, George Sanders, Edna Best, and a young Natalie Wood.

In 1948, Gene starred once again with a "Laura" co-star. It was Dana Andrews, and the movie was "The Iron Curtain". In 1950, Gene starred in a great noir classic, "Where the Sidewalk Ends". Since Gene and Dana Andrews had such great screen chemistry, they were once again co-stars. Andrews once again played a tough cop who romances Gene, a model. This triumph of a movie also stars Gary Merrill and Karl Malden. It also included a brief appearance by Gene's husband, designer Oleg Cassini.

Later that year, Gene starred as Mary Bristol in another film-noir, "Night and the City". In 1952, she starred with Spencer Tracy and Van Johnson in "The Plymouth Adventure". Gene starred with Clark Gable in "Never Let Me Go". Gene played Marva Lamarkins, a Russian ballet dancer who falls for Gable's Phillip Sutherland. This romantic adventure has been compared to "Doctor Zhivago". In 1954, Gene starred as Iris in the mystery, "The Black Widow". This film, about a murdered actress, also stars Ginger Rogers, Van Heflin, George Raft, and Peggy Ann Garner, in one of her best adult roles.

A painful divorce from Oleg Cassini in 1952 and undying guilt about her retarded daughter caused Gene to suffer from severe depression. She also had several failed affairs, including one with a young Jack Kennedy. Gene was hospitalized, but she seemed to recover. She remarried in 1960 to Howard Lee. Gene returned to Hollywood in 1962, when she made "Advise and Consent". It was another Otto Preminger great, and had a wonderful cast that included Henry Fonda, Lew Ayres, Walter Pidgeon, Charles Laughton, Burgess Meredith, Don Murray, and more. Although the film was a success, Gene wasn't getting the parts that she used to. Gene's last film was 1964's "The Pleasure Seekers". She made an appearance in 1980, on the television show "Scruples". But Gene was seeing some rough times. Her mother had died in 1978, and her husband died in 1981. Gene Tierney died of emphysema on November 6th, 1991, just 13 days before she turned 71.
