Elizabeth's Montgomery Clift Page 2

In 1958, Montgomery Clift starred with his sort-of rival, Marlon Brando, in "The Young Lions", co-starring Dean Martin, Hope Lange, and Barbara Rush. It's about two soldiers during World War II, a German and an American. Brando plays Christian Diestl, the German lieutenant who hates the war more every day. Clift plays Noah Ackerman, the American soldier who climbs the military ladder during the war. Naturally, the two men clash. This great war movie was nominated for three Oscars.

In 1959, Clift starred as Dr. John Cukrowicz in the drama, "Suddenly, Last Summer." The film also stars Katharine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor. It's about a rich widow named Mrs. Venable (Hepburn) who will fund a building for an asylum if Dr. Cukrowicz performs a labotomy on her niece, Catherine (Taylor). Catherine apparently went crazy after the death of Mrs. Venable's son, Sebastian, who died mysteriously. The film was nominated for two Oscars, and Elizabeth and Katharine were both nominated for Best Actress.

In 1961, Clift starred in two movies. One of them was "The Misfits". In this drama, Montgomery played Perce Howland, a cowboy who wants to slaughter wild horses for dog food. "The Misfits" also stars Clark Gable in his last movie, Marilyn Monroe in her last completed film, Thelma Ritter, and Eli Wallach. Clift's second picture of 1961 was the critically acclaimed "Judgement at Nuremberg". This intense courtroom drama features an all star cast, including Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster, Richard Widmark, Marlene Dietrich, and Judy Garland. Clift was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar, but lost. The film was nominated for a total of 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won two.

In 1962, Clift played Sigmund Freud in the Oscar nominated biography "Freud". His last film was 1966's "The Defector", co-starring Roddy McDowall. Montgomery Clift left this world too soon. He died on July 23, 1966 of a coronary artery occlusion, probably caused by his drug abuse. He was only 45 years old. Although Clift never won an Oscar, he is considered a great actor of the 1950's and 1960's. He left his mark on Hollywood in so many ways, with so many fantastic pictures.
