�He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 2nd, 1939.

�Before getting into making movies, he was a teacher of humanities and English at Clarkson College, a school in New York.

�He first discovered his love of movies in 1968, working with a bunch of his students on a 16mm 'The Searchers'.

�When he gave up teaching to make films, he drove a cab in New York until given his first movie job by the late musician Harry Chapin.

�Craven's first picture, the notorious 'video nasty' 'Last House On The Left', used the same plot as lngmar Bergman's art-house drama 'The Virgin Spring'.

�He based his most famous character, Nightmare On Elm Street's Freddy Krueger, on a boy who used to beat Craven up at school.

�He discovered current Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp, and launched his career by casting him in a leading role in the original 'Nightmare On Elm Street'.

�Craven was working on a remake of 'The Haunting' when he received Kevin Williamson's script for 'Scream' and decided he wanted to make that movie instead. A wise decision, since it went on to take over $200 million at the box office.

�Craven makes an unaccredited appearance in 'Scream', as Fred the janitor, wearing a Freddy Krueger jumper. He also appears as an actor in 'Shadow Zone', 'The Fear', 'Body Bags', 'Shocker', and plays himself in 'Wes Craven's New Nightmare.'

�He has just finished producing a remake of the cult 1962 chiller 'Carnival of Souls', and is already in production with 'Wishmaster 2'.
