I had little knowledge or interest in "The Dangerous Liaisons" prior to being invited to view the opera version at the University of Houston last weekend. My daughter-in-law acted and sang the role of Madame Tourvel.
It also was my first occasion to view an entire opera. I became interested enough that I will read the novel and try to see at least one of the movies.
You most likely know the opera was originally performed in San Francisco and has been televised. Renee Fleming played Tourvel in the television version, I think.
It is an interesting novel.

I saw DL for the first time about 5 days ago. Before then, I hadn't even heard of it. In all fairness, it wasn't even I who decided to watch it, but it was my two friends who were madly obsessed and loaned me the video. I instantly fell in love with the s
ory. The sex, the revenge, the evilness and seduction pulled me into the story and I got chills watching the sensuality between Close and Malcovich. These two were the absolute perfection of their characters and I find it unbelieveable critics thought Mal
ovich to be miscast. When I began watching it, I thought, "He's not even that good-looking..." but by midway through (the couch scene between Close and Malcovich is what did it for me) I realized the sensuality and sexual appeal (not to mention excellent
cting) that is John Malcovich. Glenn Close, who I've never really thought much of as an actress, floored me. She is so delightfully evil and her facial expressions are priceless. Anyway, I love your site and there is not doubt I'll be stopping back freque
tly. I only have two suggestions: you should have a general summary of each movie and the one DL quote (the long one with the "fork in the back of the hand") should end with "to win or die" not te vanity quote. Excellent page!

As with most of the classics people have no idea what they are missing out on when the original version is altered for a younger generation. Where are the intricate plot lines and the one liners that make you think rather than laying it in front of you

By a slim margin, Dangerous Liaisons is probably my all-time favorite film, because it works on so many levels and is intricate and engrossing. Rewatching you can find so many subtleties and visual metaphors it's truly amazing. The movie was robbed at t
e Oscars!!! I especially enjoy the scenes containing Close and Malkovich, two superb actors working off of each other and in great form. But perhaps the best is Glenn Close's expressiveness, especially in the face. Every glance and move, both when fool
ng someone (such as Cecile de Volanges) or being frank and truthful (as with Valmont on the couch), is almost more revealing than her words. Also, almost forgotten is Valmont's aunt, who has a small part and seems oblivious, but reveals in her scene with

I read "Dangerous Liaisons" many years ago and was very excited to see it come to the screen. And what an adaption...it was flawless. Fans of this movie might also like to watch "The Draughtmans Contract" by movie maker Peter Greenaway, and "Clarissa" (
n English two part series) by classic writer Samuel Richardson. Lovelace in "Clarissa" is very similar to De Valmont and symbolises the perfect Baroque villian.
