A 2nd Chance Part 20

written by: Katie

A.J. sat on the couch and stared at his hands, not wanting to see the look on Nancy's face. "Are you sure?" "Yes." "Well, I am not upset," he said and looked up at her wet blue eyes. "What?" "I love you, marry me." He said and smiled, he was happy and he loved her more and more every day, especially now that she was carrying his baby. "Don't just ask me just because you feel obligated to." "Of course not, I want you to marry me, I was going to ask you soon anyway. Why else would I ask you to much to Florida almost everyday?" He said and they both smiled and she nodded. "Yes, let's get married." A.J. began to cry, he was so happy, he wasn't overwhelmed by the fact that he was going to be a father and a husband soon.

The flight to Maine wasn't that long, they just made corny jokes and Nick told them all about the house to pass time. It was a long cabin by a lake, it had more than enough bedrooms and it was fully stocked with food and other things that they might need. Lauren was excited, Nick had told her about it before and it sounded beautiful. They landed and got 2 rental cars, Brian, Katie and Kevin sat in one and Howie, Nick and Lauren sat in the other. The cabin was far from town, it was very peaceful there and it was very beautiful.

Katie and Brian had one room, the one with a bathroom since she had to go to the bathroom a lot, Nick and Lauren shared one and Kevin and Howie got their own. They unpacked and looked around. There was a jacuzzi in the basement, which was all redone. There was a nice computer that they could all use, lots to read and the pond would give them some entertainment. Katie planned on watching television during the whole vacation, she needed some rest before the baby came.

They spent their days skating on the lake and throwing snowballs at each other, but Katie just sat at home and watched television. She heard that there was going to be a blizzard that night and she just hoped that she wouldn't go into labor. She was two weeks away from the due date, which meant that it could happen anytime. She made dinner and called everyone in. "Wow! It is getting pretty bad out there!" Howie exclaimed, shaking the snow off of himself. "I heard we are supposed to get 6 feet, or more," Katie said and all the guys looked surprised, they had never seen that much snow before, except for Nick who said he went to the cabin sometimes in the winter. Katie told them she didn't feel good and went into her room, she felt tired and had a back ache, nothing serious.

She slept until midnight and felt a shooting pain, she knew what it was right away, she was going into labor. She had taken the classes and knew what to do, but she didn't tell Brian, she didn't want to get him upset. She looked outside and saw there were blizzard conditions out there, it had just been Katie, Lauren, Brian and Nick's first anniversary and she remembered how it had been nothing like this in Florida. She walked around the house, doing her breathing. She knew it would be hours, even days, before the baby came, the contractions were far apart.

She walked for two hours and then finally her water broke, she tried her hardest not to scream, she ran into her room and began to shake Brian. "What? What?" He asked sleepily and then awoke when he saw the fear on Katie's face. "My water broke," she said, her lower lip trembling. He nodded his head and put her into bed and went to the phone and dialed 911. They said that there was no way they could get anyone out there for at least a day, the mayor had closed all the streets. She told him to call back once the contractions got really close. He hung up, rolled his eyes and went back into the bedroom to see Katie sweating and crying in pain. He was scared, he didn't know what to do so he went to find Lauren and woke her up, but she didn't know what to do either. By 6 in the morning everyone was up and anxious to see what would happen.

Brian called 911 again when Katie insisted that she had to push, Brian and Lauren were the only people in the room, the other guys were in the living room, pacing. The woman from 911 asked him so questions and told him to do some things in preparation, the woman told him that Katie was ready to push, and she did. She pushed and pushed and pushed for two hours, they thought they were getting no where when they finally saw that the baby was crowning. Brian was hysterically crying and so was Lauren. Katie gave them two more pushes and finally the baby was out and Brian burst into tears of happiness.

"It's a boy!" He said and followed the instructions that the woman on the phone gave him, he cut the umbilical cord and put the baby on his mother's chest and followed some more instructions. He finally hung up and took the baby into the bathroom and gave him a gentle sponge bath to clean him up. He changed Katie's clothes and took the sheets of the bed and cleaned them and then ran out, remembering that everyone was out there waiting.

"It's a boy!" He exclaimed again and everyone gave him a high five and went into the room and looked at him. "What are you going to name him?" Howie asked. "Brian." She said with a big smile, still exhausted from the ordeal, but happy that her little miracle was with her now. "What?" Brian said, they had never discussed this.

"It is going to be Brian. Remember when I was in the hospital and you and I looked in the nursery and I never said I was going to have a baby?" "Yeah..." Brian said, remembering that very well. "Well, you were right, I did have a baby, but I was also right, I didn't have him in the hospital, I told you that I never wanted to see another hospital again." She said and everyone laughed.

Several hours later the ambulance came and took them to the local hospital. Everything seemed fine, they wouldn't have to stay long. A.J. and Nancy came too and they all finally met each other and they announced their big news. "We are getting married and we are having a baby," A.J. said with a big smile. Katie looked at him and smiled as she held her new baby and remembered how much she had gone through just to be happy. She had prayed for so many miracles that resulted in a big miracle, her son. She thanked god for giving her the best husband, friends, and son in the world and hoped there would be many more children to follow.

The End!
