Weithorn & David Litt [TV-PG-DL] Carrie surprises Doug by having his 70-inch big screen TV delivered into the basement. Then tragedy strikes, Carrie's father's wife passes away suddenly. Carrie realizes Arthur cannot take care of himself and does not trust her sister Sara to do the job, so she gets Doug to agree that the solution is to have both of them move in. This means Doug must give up his TV room. Guests: none 2. "Fat City" 28 September 1998 P: Annette Sahakian Davis D: Robert Berlinger W: Cathy Yuspa & Josh Goldsmith [TV-PG-DL] Arthur shows Doug his many, unorganized photo albums, and Doug sees a photo of Carrie's mother near the end of her life when she gained a lot of weight. He learns from Arthur that all the women in the family gain weight, so he tricks Carrie into going on a diet by stating both of them should, against Deacon's advice to not mess around with his happy marriage. Learning that Doug thinks she should lose weight makes Carrie unhappy, and she takes it out on him. Guests: none 3. "Cello, Goodbye" 5 October 1998 P: Annette Sahakian Davis D: Gail Mancuso W: Michael J. Weithorn & David Litt [TV-PG-DL] Doug feels threatened when Carrie's new legal secretary job gives her a taste of big-city sophistication. He also thinks her boss, Evan, is hitting on her, which she denies, because she works closely with, sometimes until late, and even has given her rides home. Doug pays a visit to Carrie's workplace and tries to see if her boss is interested in hitting on her, which he isn't. When Evan gives Carrie tickets to see a famous cellist, it means she will miss Doug's softball game, and they fight. Doug shows up at the concert and annoys Carrie but then tries to sit through it. He does not enjoy it, although she does, and she and her insults show up at his next game. Guests: Albie Selznick - Evan Lynn A. "Richie's Song" 12 October 1998 P: Annette Sahakian Davis D: Robert Berlinger W: Tony Sheehan [TV-PG-DL] When Deacon and his wife back out of dinner at the Heffernan's, Richie uses the chance to get himself and his wife, Marie, invited over. Carrie does not like Marie and really does not look forward to the evening. Afterwards, Carrie lets Doug know that Marie is cheating on Richie and that it's up to Doug to inform him. Doug has a hard time working up the courage to tell him, which he finally does. Richie moves out, and they go to counseling together, although she wants to see the therapist one-on-one since "she's the one who has the problem." Arthur tries a deodorant he does not like and tries to get the company to honor its money-back guarantee. He asks Doug to help, who just throws the deodorant away, not realizing Arthur is intent to follow through. Guests: Michele Maika - Marie Note: Originally scheduled to air 5 October 1998. 5. "Paternal Affairs" 19 October 1998 P: Annette Sahakian Davis D: Brian K. Roberts W: David Bickel [TV-PG-D] Doug and Carrie hold an anniversary party, and Arthur is furious to discover that neighbor Joe Garver is invited since he eats too many deviled eggs. While watching Garver take a lot of eggs at the party, he meets and is smitten with Doug's favorite aunt, Sheila, who earlier dropped a bomb on Doug by stating that she is separated from his uncle, Hank. Arthur asks Doug's permission to court Sheila and, after Carrie's prodding, gets Doug's approval. The two hit it off, and Doug is distressed to learn that the two are sleeping together. Eventually, even Carrie gets disturbed by this. Arthur states his intention to marry Sheila, and when Doug visits her, he learns she does not want to marry Arthur but play the field, including with Joe Garver, who arrives while Doug is there. Arthur arrives and sadly learns the truth. Spence takes a liking to Sara and agrees to shoot updated modeling photos of her. "Head First" 26 October 1998 P: Annette Sahakian Davis D: Pamela Fryman W: Michael J. Weithorn & David Litt [TV-PG-D] With Carrie and Sara going to a bachelorette party and Doug going to play pool with the guys, Arthur feels snubbed and thinks he is going to spend Friday night alone. But Doug takes pity on him and invites him along. The evening is nearly a disaster (including a bar fight started by Arthur), but Carrie rewards Doug. Doug uses this as an incentive to continue hanging around Arthur, although he discovers he will not continue to get rewards. After he ruins the guys' poker game, Doug confesses his reasons to Carrie, and she and Doug sit down with Arthur to discuss the situation, at which Arthur gets the upper hand.
