ABC Cleans House

LOS ANGELES - ABC won't announce its fall 2002 schedule until Tuesday (May 14), but according to industry sources several shows currently on the air were given the ax over the weekend. The remored cancellations include the comedies "Dharma & Greg," "The Job" and "Spin City" and freshman drama "Philly."

While "Dharma & Greg" and "Spin City" were once darlings of the network, their ratings have taken a slide. The cutting of "The Job" was considered by most as just a matter of time, as its edgy style and flawed hero doesn't fit with the renewed committment the network made to family programming in November.

Although it has an uneven first year, there had been hope that the Steven Bochco legal drama "Philly," which many felt had hit its stride later in the season, would return. No word whether star Kim Delaney will return to Bochco's cop drama "NYPD Blue," which she left to play a frazzled criminal defender.

Since Heather Locklear's unemployed, she should give Charles Pratt, Jr. a call. He didn't think Heather would do General Hospital, but the producers of Spin City didn't think she'd do a sitcom either.
