James Darren talks about what an old fart he is From the June 1st Soap Opera Digest:

MELROSE PLACE

Young At Heart: When James Darren (Tony) made the movie Gidget in 1959, many of his MP co-stars were still in diapers, but Darren says that didn't matter when he taped the prime-time sudser. "Some of them knew it, some of them didn't," he shrugs. "Most of the people, like Jack Wagner [Peter], Thomas Calabro [Michael], Heather [Locklear, Amanda] and Rob [Estes, Kyle] know the business." According to the actor, the Spelling set was a lot better than several others he's been on. "I was doing a show once - it wasn't MELROSE - and I mentioned Clark Gable, and they had no idea who he was," Darren sighs. "I felt sorry. I always feel that whatever your business is, you should know everything about it. When people don't know much about the business, I feel that they're in it just to be movie stars, not to be actors. Jack Wagner said, 'I'm so happy you're here because we usually work with babies on the show,'" Darren smiles. "That made me feel pretty good."

They usually work with "babies" because that's what the audience wants. It was The Place. It wasn't Golden Girls.
