Aaron Spelling talks about the renewal of 90210 and The Place From the February 9th Soap Opera Digest:

late-breakingnews

90210: THE FINAL YEAR
BEVERLY HILLS, 90210 has been renewed for a tenth and final season. "I'm thrilled," beams Executive Producer Aaron Spelling. "I love this cast; we're all very close friends. I'm more excited about this than having a new show picked up!"
Co-producer and star Brian Austin Green (David) adds, "We're doing one more year. It just didn't feel like we were ready for the end yet. I think everyone's coming back. In doing one more year, we have the opportunity to [reach] 300 episodes. Then I think we're calling it quits."
"Calling it quits" is relative, though. Spelling confirms that there are plans for a spin-off series called 90210: THE NEW YEARS. "We have a great script - very different," he exclaims. "But I think it would be wrong if I were to do 90210: THE NEW YEARS while the original was on the air. I love the [original] cast too much."
Less likely is a renewal for 90210's seven-year-old spin-off, MELROSE PLACE. "No answer yet on MELROSE," says Spelling at press time. "It's a very expensive show to do. I think we'll probably know next week or the week after."

This didn't sound very promising. And a few days later, the show was officially canned.
