Have you ever dreamed of walking in the shoes of a celebrity? Perhaps you'd rather slip into Drew Barrymore's blood-spattered sweater from "Scream," or the late Brandon Lee's gothic get-up from "The Crow"?
�����Two local stores can make your star fantasies come true. It's a Wrap! and Star Wares on Main offer for sale thousands of wardrobe and personal items from movies and television.
�����Located in a warehouse-like space in Burbank, It's a Wrap! caters to fans and bargain shoppers alike. Although the walls are adorned with memorabilia such as Sylvester Stallone's boxing trunks from "Rocky," and bathing suits from "Baywatch," collectibles are not for sale in the store. (Check the It's a Wrap! Web site, http://www.movieclothes.com, instead.)
�����The showroom is more of a wardrobe clearinghouse, packed with treasures from dozens of television series, as well as independent and studio films. A chart lists productions the store currently has clothing from and its corresponding code, such as MPL for "Melrose Place," or SNF for "Seinfeld." All clothing is labeled with the code.
�����Contemporary and vintage pieces for men, women and children start at $1. An upstairs department is filled with more expensive, but still discounted, designer duds from Giorgio Armani, Calvin Klein, Nicole Miller, Escada, Vivienne Tam, Equipment, Bebe and others. There are some nice evening gowns (mostly from the soaps), that start at less than $100.
�����The idea to sell Hollywood's unwanted wardrobe pieces to the public came from Jan Hallman Dion. Working for CBS in the early 1980s, she was asked to run an auction for the company, during which she witnessed an entire trailer of wardrobe sell for $1,200. By 1982, Dion had transformed her idea into a shop, called the Retake Room. The name was changed to It's a Wrap! in 1992, when daughter Tiara joined the business.
�����"The clothes are exciting for the fans, but they are also good quality at a good price. Since many of the pieces have been worn only once, what we offer is different from regular resale," explains Tiara. Most items are priced at 35% to 95% off retail price.
�����Where It's a Wrap! is about volume and price, Star Wares on Main is about collecting.
�����The Santa Monica boutique deals mostly in higher-priced celebrity memorabilia and costumes. Offerings include props from "Gone With the Wind" and "Casablanca," as well as frocks from current flicks, such as Matt Dillon's Hawaiian-print shirt from "There's Something About Mary." Items are priced from a few dollars to a few thousand dollars. A couple years back, the store sold Madonna's famous Jean Paul Gaultier bustier for $25,000.
�����Star Wares also stocks designer clothes from the celebrity closets of Linda Blair, Cher, Elizabeth Taylor and others. Up to 50% of each celebrity closet item purchased goes to a charity, such as Taylor's AIDS Foundation and Heal the Bay.
�����Marcia Tysseling and her brother John opened Star Wares on Main in 1989, with help from Marcia's friend Joan Rivers. (Marcia was the Rivers family nanny.)
�����Although some customers look to Star Wares on Main for discounted clothing from the likes of Chanel and Ralph Lauren, most are serious collectors. Many sales are done by mail order, Marcia says. "We have customers from as far away as Bahrain and Australia. Some collectors we know are looking only for vintage Hollywood or for Madonna, so when items come in, we give them a call," she explains. Soon, the store will launch a Web site (http://www.starwares.com) for online shopping.
�����Although It's a Wrap! and Star Wares on Main may not give you the celebrity life, at least you'll get the celebrity look. And who knows, maybe a little stardust will rub off.
