GETTING booted from Days of Our Lives three months ago was the best thing that ever happened to Steve Wilder - the soap stud has been picked to play a plum role on Melrose Place!
     After losing the part of Jack on Days, Steve auditioned for the Aaron Spelling soap Sunset Beach - and was stunned when they tapped him to become a regular on Melrose instead, says an insider.
     He'll play good guy James, who befriend's Josie Bissett's character Jane and tries to get her to reconcile with her ex-husband Michael (Thomas Calabro).
     "Steve feared he'd face lean times," says the insider, "but now he's crowing he's on top of the TV world."
