Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment

Help pave the way for victims of sexual and gender violence!

Spring 2001 Semester Projects

(Angela, PAVE Founder)

1. The first meeting will be held on February 19, 2001 at 7:30 pm in the Union.

2. Campus Safety Campaign

  1. Poster Project: We will be working on putting up posters on sexual assault awareness in the men's and women's bathrooms of bars and restaurants in the downtown area.
  2. There is a strong correlation between alcohol and sexual violence. Over 80% of sexual assaults are committed by an acquaintance (Northwest Center Against Sexual Assault), and the majority of those involve alcohol. We'll be reaching out to young people in high-risk situations.

  3. Line of Sight: We want more of the Emergency Blue Light phones on campus, especially in high-risk areas. It is also important to educate the students on the use of these phones. In the past, people have used them to call and ask for directions and order pizza. Since they go directly to the 911 emergency phone system, we need to make sure that this doesn't happen.
  4. SafePark: The faculty parking lots that are open to the public at 10:00 pm should be changed to 5:30 pm. This would allow commuting students a safer alternative to parking in a far ramp and walking alone.

2. Supporting Legislation

Useful tactics: petition and letter drives, lobbying

3. Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is SAAM and the week is April 23-27. Take Back the Night is April 27 (there were hardly any students at the last TBTN, let's change that!) There are a lot of great ideas that have yet to be approved, like the Silent Witness project. I plan to do this month up BIG, let's try to get a lot of students involved, the more males the better!! Any other ideas?

  1. Monthly Mail-out

Each month we will send a PAVE mail-out to the members on our mailing list. It will highlight the topics discussed at the previous meeting, talk about current events, and honor one sexual assault survivor.

5. Theatre

Acting and plays are great ways to get your message across. We could either perform these plays for the area high schools or hold events in an area theatre. Talk to the Theatre Department and ask the Professor to have students write a script.

6. "I Have the Courage, We Have the Power"

Journalism students made up this slogan. This is our PR campaign and we want to put this on Metro buses and around town.
