Genealogy of James Patterson, son of Robert Patterson and his wife Esther Spaulding Patterson, his and their Ancestors and the descendants of their Ancestors. Copied November 16th, 1846 from Miss Elisabeth Patterson Duncan's records obtained from her ancestors and also from her personal recollection. The oldest person of whom we have certain knowledge as being one of our ancestors was John Patterson who was born about 1550 in Argyleshire in the west of Scotland and who was married to Mary Stuart about 1605. He, with his family, emigrated with the colony that settled in the North of Ireland in 1619. He purchased a large plantation from the Earl of Antrim in the county of Antrim, parish of Priestland and town of Glenluse. The precise time of his death is not known (he is supposed to have been about 90 years of age at his death, neither do we know the number of his children. As was the custom, the property descended to the eldest son, whose name was Robert. Robert Patterson was born in Scotland before his parents came to Ireland. He was married in 1676 to Rachel Thompson. They had a family of which we have no account except the oldest son, who also inherited the estate, whose name was John. The precise time of the death of Robert and Rachel Patterson is not positively known. They had but two children John and Rachel. Rachel was never married. She died young. John Patterson, son of Robert and Rachel Patterson, was born in Ireland in 1678 and married Miss Sarah Farrier about the year 1706 or 1707. Their children were Robert, born 1708, John born 1710, William born 1712, James born 1714 and Peter born 1716. If there were daughters, they remained in Ireland.
