Woodrow Arnett, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Paul B. Hall Medical
Center.

Mrs. Arnett was born June 7, 1912, in Magoffin County.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Magoffin County
Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Woodrow Arnett Cemetery,
Salyersville.

1912-2002

Fannie Baldwin, 89, of Paintsville, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Mt.
Manor Nursing Home, Paintsville.

Born Dec. 22, 1912, in Denver, a daughter of the late Andy and Mini
Pelphrey Blair, she was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bayless Baldwin.

Funeral services will be today, Friday, Oct 11, at Paintsville
Funeral Home Chapel, Paintsville, with Elder Kenny Pelphrey
officiating.

Burial will be in Mayo Memorial Cemetery, Paintsville, under
direction of Paintsville Funeral Home.

1906-2002

Hattie Baldwin, 96, of Staffordsville, died Saturday, Oct. 26, in
Hall Medical Center in Paintsville.

She was born June 1, 1906 in Denver, Ky. Mrs. Baldwin was preceded
in death by her husband. Lloyd Baldwin.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Preston Funeral
Home, Inc. in Paintsville. Burial will be in Horne Cemetery at
Staffordsville.

1925 - 2002

Emery Otis Barker, 77, of Wittensville, died Friday, Oct. 25, at
his residence.

Mr. Barker was born July 15, 1925, in Johnson County.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Crace Barker.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Jones-Preston Funeral
Chapel in Paintsville. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park in
Staffordsville.

KERMAN BEAM
1948-2002

Kerman Beam, 54, of Grove City, Ohio, died Friday, Oct. 25, at
Grant Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.

Born March 17, 1948, in Mason, Texas, he was a son of the late
Manuel and Alma Merideth Beam. He was a Vietnam Army veteran.

Survivors include a son, Randall Glenn Beam of Columbus, Ohio; four
daughters, Elizabeth Michael Woods, Kristy Charlene Beam, and
Natasha Lee Beam, all of Columbus, and Jennifer Nicole Miller of
Elizabethtown; two brothers, Billy Beam of Mason and Wiltor Beam of
Wichita Falls, Texas; and five sisters, Betty Robertson of San
Antonio, Texas, Wanda White of Mason, Norma Britten of Montery,
Ind., and Mae Holly and Angie Rissle, both of Corpus Christi,
Texas.

Funeral services were Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Sugar Grove United
Baptist Church, with Elders Eual McKenzie and John G. Pelphrey
officiating.

Burial was in Sparks Cemetery, Little Blaine, under direction of
Paintsville Funeral Home.

ROBERT ULYSSES BURKE
1904-2002

Robert Ulysses Burke, 97, of Louisa, died Sunday, Oct. 20, at J.J.
Jordan Geriatric Center.

Born Oct. 26, 1904, in Johnson County, he was a son of the late
Grant and Addie Clifton Burke. He was a retired coal miner/farmer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Goldie Collins Burke; and a
son, Angus Burke.

Survivors include six sons, Willis Burke and Lowell Burke, both of
Van Lear, Paul Burke of Newport News, Va., John Burke of Ohio and
Bob Burke of Wabash, Ind.; a daughter, Wanda Dye of Van Lear; 14
grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Jones-Preston
Funeral Chapel with Minister Bob McKinney officiating.

Burial will be in Burke Family Cemetery, Van Lear, under direction
of Jones-Preston Funeral Home.

LEXIE CANTRELL

Lexie Cantrell, 80, of Volga died Friday, Oct. 11, in Paul B. Hall
Medical Center in Paintsville.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur Cantrell.

The funeral was at 1 p.m. today at Paintsville Funeral Home. Burial
was in Lakeview Memorial Cemetery in Staffordsville.

ELVA L. CASTLE

Elva L. Castle, 82, a longtime resident of North Lewisburg, died
peacefully with his family at his side Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at
The Gables at Green Pastures.

He was the former owner of Castle Home Building and Development for
more than 40 years and was a former employee of Westinghouse in
Bellefontaine. He attended the North Lewisburg Church of Christ in
Christian Union until his failing health.

He was born in Johnson County, Ky., to the late Sullivan and Mima
Wilbur Castle and was predeceased by a brother and three sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gladys P. Weaver Castle
whom he married April 3, 1946; a daughter, Wanda (Everett) McClasky
of Marion; four sons, Eugene Castle of Edison, Steven L. (Linda)
Castle and   Keith A. (Susan) Castle of North Lewisburg and Darrell
(Cathy) Buffenbarger of Tampa, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; several
great-grandchildren; three sisters, Hazel (Jim) Organ of North
Lewisburg, Jean (Don) Jones of Union City and Faye (Jim) Ferryman
of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Freshwater-
McDonald Funeral home in North Lewisburg and burial will be at
Maple Grove Cemetery.

IVA JEAN CASTLE
1929-2002

Iva Jean Arms Castle, 73, of Thealka, died Monday, Oct. 28.

Born March 13, 1929, in Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Willie
and Ida Collins Arms. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by a son, William Franklin Castle; and two
grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest “Cracker Bill” Castle of Thealka; five
sons, Leroy Salyers and Randy Allen Castle, both of Thealka, Ronald David
Castle of Hager Hill, Ralph Castle of Mather, Tenn., and Glenn Richard Castle
of Martin County; four daughters, Kathy Wheeler and Trish Reeves, both of
Flemingsburg, Wanda Louise Tackett of Wheelwright, and Edith Marie Jackson of
Thealka; a brother, Sanford Shorty Arms of Thealka; three sisters, Virgie
Wheeler of Flemingsburg, Dora Clark, and Joyce Taylor of Thealka; several
grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Thursday, Oct. 31, at Thealka Free Will Baptist Church
with Revs. Gary Blair and Bob Lyons officiating.

Burial was in Arms Family Cemetery, Well Hollow, Thealka, under direction of
Jones-Preston Funeral Home, Paintsville.

1914-2002

Murel Click, 88, of Staffordsville, died Saturday, Oct. 5, at his residence.

Born Feb. 14, 1914, in Johnson County, a son of the late Joe and Ada Conley
Click, he was a retired coal miner and farmer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rushie Hackworth Click.

Survivors include four sons, James Click, Jessie Click and Jimmy click, all of
Flat Gap, and Jackie Click of Staffordsville; two daughters, Judy Cochran of
Hager Hill and Jo Ann Creech of Volga; five sisters, Maxie Caudill and Neva
Blanton, both of Swamp Branch, Okie Conley of Carrie, Ohio, Rushie Spears of
Leander, and Mary Ramey of Shelby, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and three great-
grandchildren.

Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 7, at Riceville New Bethel Freewill Baptist
Church, with Revs. Roger Thornsbury and Danny Ward officiating.

Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery, Staffordsville, under direction of Jones-

Dortha Daniel, 89, of River, died Thursday, Oct. 24, at her home.

Mrs. Daniel was born April 27, 1913, in Johnson County.

Her husband, Richard Wade "Bus" Daniel, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville.
Burial will be in Daniel Cemetery in River.

Maude “Mac” Daniels, 92, of Paintsville, died Monday, Oct. 7, at Paul B. Hall
Regional Medical Center, Paintsville.

Born March 31, 1910, in Magoffin County, a daughter of the late John and Rera
Risner McFarland, she was a retired merchant and owner of Family Store.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Daniels.

Survivors include a son, Michael A. Daniels of Winchester; and two
grandchildren.

Funeral services were Thursday, Oct. 10, at First Baptist Church with Dr.
Charles Milam officiating.

Burial was in Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville, under direction of
Preston Funeral Home, Paintsville.

Gypise Marie Dutton, 91, of Kokomo, Ind., died Friday, Oct. 18.

Born Aug. 8, 1911, in Paintsville, she was a daughter of the late Adam and
Effie Penix Crum. She was a homemaker and a member of Little Friendship United
Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, William “Bill” Dutton of Kokomo; three sons,
Panzel L. Dutton of Zenia, Ohio, Donald Dutton of Kokomo and Raymond Dutton of
Miamisburg, Ohio; and three sisters, Marda Crum and Janie Butcher, both of
Boons Camp, and Estarah Davis of Paintsville.

Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 21, at Little Friendship United Baptist
Church with Revs. Jake Crum, Claude Mollette, Glen Penix and Shade Walters
officiating.

Burial was in Crum Family Cemetery, Boons Camp, under direction of Preston

Della Marie Estepp, 79, of Thealka, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, in Paul B. Hall
Medical Center in Paintsville.

Mrs. Estepp was born April 18, 1923, in Johnson County.

She is survived by her husband, Lundie Estepp.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Thealka Free Will Baptist Church.
Burial will be in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery.

Virginia Harrod Hall, 94, of Scottsville, died Thursday, Oct. 3, at Cal Turner
Extended Care.

Born Sept. 16, 1908, in Nelson County, she was a registered nurse.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Lloyd Hall.

Survivors include two sons, Dr. John Hall of Scottsville and Dr. William M.
Hall of Somerset; a daughter, Margaret Ellen Sturdivant of San Diego, Calif.;
13 grandchildren; and 33 great- grandchildren.

Funeral services were Sunday, Oct. 6, at St. Lukes Catholic Church,
Scottsville, with Father Robert Damron officiating.

Frances B. “Frankie” Hart, 76, of Forest Hill, Md., formerly
of Paintsville, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, Bel
Air, Md.

Born Nov. 30, 1925, in Johnson County, a daughter of the late Lewis Mancer and
Almeda Ann Shepherd Bradley, he was a retired telephone operator with South
Central Bell.

Survivors include a son, Bernard Francis Hart of Forest Hill; four sisters,
Numia Pickle of Paintsville, Mary Schell of Flint, Mich., Gladys Oppenheimer of
Worthington, Ohio, and Edyth Onstott of Rochester, Ind.; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were Friday, Oct. 4, at Highland Memorial Funeral Chapel,
Staffordsville.

Offutt Howard, 79, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical
Center, Paintsville.

Born June 9, 1923, in Martin County, he was a son of Ben and Susan Harless
Howard. He was a coal miner.

Survivors include his wife, Odie Page Howard; six sons, Offutt Howard Jr., Curt
Howard, Ronnie Howard and Lonnie Howard, all of Van Lear, Marvin Howard of
Staffordsville, and Delbert Howard of Ohio; four daughters, Betty Daniels of
Van Lear, and Mary Jane Carpenter, Joyce Murry and Goldie Daniels, all of
Pikeville; four brothers, Darce Howard, Charlie Howard, and Jerry Howard, all
of Ohio, and Albert Howard of Florida; a sister, Goldie Goble of Inez; three
half sisters, Lola Thacker and Brenda Stevens, both of Ohio, and Geneva

Nell Lemaster Hughes, 75, of Prestonsburg died Friday, Oct. 18, at Pikeville
Methodist Hospital.

Born Sept. 20, 1927, in Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late William
Herbert and Beulah Blanton Lemaster. She was a homemaker and attended Long Fork
United Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Millard Hughes Jr.

Survivors include a son, Larry Hughes of Prestonsburg; a brother, Paul Lemaster
of West Prestonsburg; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Sunday, Oct. 20, at Carter Funeral Home, Prestonsburg,
with Elders John Pelphrey and Press Hughes officiating. Burial was in Highland
Memorial Park, Staffordsville, under the direction of Carter Funeral Home,
Prestonsburg.

Delano Lemaster, 64, of Shepherdsville died Friday, Oct. 4, at
Audubon Hospital, Louisville.

Born May 27, 1938, in Johnson County, a son of Mace and Ollie Thompson
Lemaster, he was a coal miner.

Survivors include his wife, Sara Rebecca Howard Lemaster; three sons, Scotty
Lemaster of West Van Lear, Ronnie Lemaster of Carrollton and Tim Lemaster of
Shepherdsville; a brother, Richard Lemaster of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters,
Mary Ellen Pitt and Jean Daniels, both of Columbus, and Carol Sue Booth of
Circleville, Ohio; and six grandchildren.

Born July 8, 1915, at Blaine, she was a daughter of the late Morton
and Manda Greene Wheeler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnie Lemaster.

Billie Jean Rice Grubb McDowell, 65, of 3141 Carter Ave., Ashland, Ky., died
Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at her residence.

She was born Feb. 7, 1937, in Johnson County, Ky., a daughter of the late
Luther and Mary Rice.

Surviving are her husband, Ronnie Gene McDowell; eight children, Marie Thomas,
Joseph Grubb and Robin McCoy, all of Ashland, Arminda Bishop and Theresa
Geeting, both of Tennessee, Eddie Bosley and Brenda Allen, both of Texas, and
Denise Franklin of Virginia; one stepson, Ronnie Dean McDowell of Lexington,
Ky.; five sisters, Nellie Gillum and Ruth Short, both of Ashland, Josephine
Stapleton of West Virginia, Betty Scaggs of Michigan and Gladys Martinez of
Washington; two brothers, LeRoy Rice of Ashland and Luther Rice of Portsmouth,
Ohio; 19 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Ashland
Cemetery Mausoleum by the Rev. Johney Little. Burial will be in Ashland
Cemetery.

Friends may call at Mrs. McDowell's residence after 5 p.m. Friday.

Homer Meek, 71, of Meally, died Sunday, Oct. 20, at his residence.

Born Jan. 17, 1931, in Johnson County, he was a son of the late
Willis and Mollie Delong Meek. He was a retired coal miner and a
Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Mills Meek of Meally; three
daughters, Vickie Daniel of River, Tonya McDavid of Grayson and
Twana Hickman of Boons Camp; three sons, Steve Meek of Stambaugh,
Gary Meek of Boons Camp and James Meek of Meally; two sisters, Joyce
Blevins of Staffordsville and Darlene Clark of W. Alexander, Ohio;
two brothers, Arnold Meek of Stanville and Paul Meek of Boons Camp;
14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Dessie Mullins, 96, of Martha, died Tuesday, Oct.29 2002.

Born Jan. 17, 1906, in Paintsville, she was a daughter of the late
Cornelius and Carrie Osborne Skaggs. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Okie Mullins; five
brothers, John M. Skaggs, Calvin Skaggs, Mitchell Skaggs, Harrison
Skaggs and Homer Skaggs; and three sisters, Lexie Skaggs, Dixie
Smith and Esta Wright.

Survivors include three sons, Glair Mullins of Cottonwood, Tenn.,
Redgel Mullins of Galena, Ohio, and Carroll Mullins of Ashland; two
daughters, Eunice Adams of Marion, Ind. and Gloria Ferguson of
Martha; a brother, Homer Skaggs of Louisville; 11 grandchildren; and
29 great- grandchildren.

Dalton James Oaks, five-month-old son of Orville Clay and Tracy Lynn
Oaks of Ft. Campbell, died Thursday, Oct. 31, at Blanchfield Army
Community Hospital.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by paternal grandparents,
Jerry and Eunice Oaks of Prestonsburg; maternal grandparents, Jack
and Bedelia Hardman of Omaha, Neb.; paternal great- grandmother,
Fern Allen; maternal great-grandmother, Toots Wilcoxson; two
brothers, Jack Walker and Clayton Oaks, both of Ft. Campbell; and a
sister, Frankie Marie Oaks of Ft. Campbell.

Larry Phelps, 52, of Garland, Texas, formerly of Meally, died
Thursday, Oct. 3 2002.

Born Oct. 5, 1949, in Johnson County, the son of Edwin (Pete) and
Carmona Webb Phelps, he was a carpenter.

Additional survivors include two sons, Jonathan Michael Phelps and
Jason Mathew Phelps, both of Garland; and a sister, Janet Taylor of
Meally.

Funeral services will be today, Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the Phelps and
Son Funeral Home Paintsville chapel with Leroy Auxier officiating.

Burial will be in the Phelps Family Cemetery at Meally under the
direction of Phelps and Son Funeral Home.

Lillian Clare Picklesimer, 76, of Colorado Springs,
Colo., died Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Life Care Nursing Home, Colorado
Springs.

Born Oct. 1, 1926, in Brown County, Ohio, she was a daughter of
Bertie Leona Penny Moore and the late Frederick Moore, she was a
homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewellyn Gray Picklesimer.

Survivors include two sons, Greg Picklesimer of Colorado Springs and
Martin Picklesimer of Sardinia, Ohio; a daughter, Debra Moran of
Guyton, Ga.; and nine grandchildren.

Anna Powers, 90, of Van Lear, died Saturday, Oct. 26, at her
residence.

Mrs. Powers was born Oct. 1, 1912 in Johnson County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Orvile Powers.

Chapel in Paintsville. Burial will be in the family cemetery on Webb

Glenn H. Preece, 66, of Lexington, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, at
Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio.

Born Aug. 2, 1936, in Martin County, a son of the late Arthur and
Corma Davis Preece, he was a retired welder with Kentucky-West
Virginia Gas company.

Survivors include his wife, Iva Dean Perry Preece of Lexington; a
son, Gary Preece of Lexington; two daughters, Glendine Peece Hale of
Prestonsburg and Charlotte Preece Combs of Lexington; two brothers,
Winfrey Preece and Arthur Kenny Preece, both of Inez; two sisters,
Monica Horn of Inez and Sue Few of Barboursville, W.Va.; and seven
great-grandchildren.

Baptist Church with Revs. Manford Fannin and Jeff Cooper

Irene Preston, 86, of Nippa, died Thursday, Oct. 24, in the Paul B.
Hall Medical Center at Paintsville.

Mrs. Preston was born March 9, 1916, in Magoffin County. She was the
widow of Walter Preston.

Funeral services will be noon Monday at the Preston Funeral Home at
Paintsville.

Burial will be in the Lakeview Memorial Cemetery at Staffordsvillle.

Robert Paul Reed, 61, of Flat Gap, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Paul
B. Hall Medical Center, Paintsville.

Born Sept. 9, 1935, in Johnson County, a son of Hazel VanHoose Reed
of Flat Gap and the late John Reed, he was a carpenter and a member
of Pigeon Enterprise Baptist Church.

Flat Gap; two sons, Bobby Reed of Tutor Key and Alan Shannon Reed of

Mr. Salyers was born June 16, 1932, in Johnson County.

He is survived by his wife, Hermalee Webb Salyers.

The funeral will be at noon Monday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in
Paintsville.

Burial will be in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery in
Staffordsville.

at Mountain Manor Nursing Home, Paintsville.

Born Jan. 6, 1918, in Magoffin County, a daughter of the late Warner
and Nettie Prater Phips, she was a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia “Tooter” Adams Castle of
Paintsville; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Chapel, Paintsville, with Rev. Richard Williams officiating.

Noah Stapleton, 98, of Flat Gap, died Sunday, Oct. 6, at Highland
Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.

Born Aug. 28, 1904, in Johnson County, a son of the late Sandy and
Hattie Brown Stapleton, he was retired from Millers Pipeline
Company.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Adams Stapleton of Flat Gap; two
sons, James Earl Stapleton and William David Stapleton, both of Flat
Gap; four daughters, Betty Thompson of Sitka, Hattie Mae Auxier of
Paintsville, and Mary Perciful and Judy O’Bryan, both of Flat Gap; a
brother, Rex Stapleton of Flat Gap; a sister, Pearl Hines of
Monticello, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; and several great- and great-
great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Thursday, Oct. 10, at Jones-Preston Funeral
Home Chapel, Paintsville, with Rev. Jerry Scott officiating.

Burial was in Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville, under

Billy Ray Tackett, 68, of Staffordsville, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, at
his residence.

Born Aug. 5, 1934, in Johnson County, he was a son of the late
Sherman Tackett and Cynthia Salyer Tackett. He was a retired auto
mechanic.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Pauline Hampton Tackett; a
daughter, Brenda Kay Ward of Offutt; five sons, Anthony Tackett,
William Gregory Tackett, David Tackett and Kenneth Tackett, all of
Staffordsville, and Jeffery Tackett of Volga; a brother, Sherman
“Whitie” Tackett Jr. of Staffordsville; a sister, Lillie Mae
Holbrook of Paintsville; a half brother, Robert Jones of Volga; 13
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

JANET L. VANHOOSE

Janet L. VanHoose, 59, 41 Noble St., died at 8:35 p.m. Wednesday,
Oct. 30, 2002, at Lutheran Hospital.

She was born on Jan. 29, 1943, in Johnson County, Ky., to Ollie and
Walena (Murray) Clay.

She married William VanHoose on July 20, 1963, in Johnson County,
Ky. He died on Nov. 3, 1991.

She graduated from Oil Springs High School, Kentucky, in 1961.

She was a longtime employee of United Technologies, and had lived in
Wabash for 35 years.

Surviving are a daughter, Johnna (Thomas) VanHoose Dinse,
Indianapolis; two brothers, Douglas Clay, Lagro, and Gary Clay,
Kentucky; and a sister, Regina Clay, Johnson County, Ky.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Grandstaff-Hentgen
Manchester Avenue Chapel.

The Rev. David A. Dell will officiate.

Burial will be in Mississinewa Cemetery, Somerset.

Jordan Geriatric Center, Louisa.

Born March 10, 1927, in River, she was a daughter of the late
Garrett and Fannie DeBoard Arrowood.

Survivors include her husband, Earl VanHoose of River; two sons, Ray
Morris VanHoose of Washington Court House, Ohio, and Larry Eugene
VanHoose of River; a daughter, Jannett Sue Copley of Reynoldsville,
Ohio; a brother, Garrett Arrowood Jr. of Cinncinati, Ohio; three
sisters, Fannie Ellen Gray, Garnett and Vivian Gray, all of
Cincinnati; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Paintsville, with Rev. Barry Keith VanHoose officiating.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Shirley Webb, Leon Webb
and Ernest Webb; and four sisters, Georgia Steenbrugh, Hazel Goble,
Myrtle Richmond and Ula Ferguson.

Survivors include her husband, Brooksie Webb of Somerset; two
daughters, Marcella Webb of Somerset and Lois Azbill of Lexington;
two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Witten was the husband of the late Oma Little Witten.
