Following graduation, I moved to Florida where Mike was stationed at Mayport Naval Station in Jacksonville, Fla. He was on the USS Antrim, a Fast Frigate Guided Missile for 3 years. When they were out to sea practicing a manoeuver, a target drone they had shot down hit the water and bounced up into their ship, cutting a huge hole in the side. It killed one person, a teacher who was trapped in his bunk. While the ship was being repaired, a hurricane was hitting us and they were evacuating all the ships, but theirs was damaged, so they had to stay on the ship and I spent my first hurricane alone. The next day after power was restored, the phone rang and a man told me that I had won a jeep. "Yeah right buddy, don�t do this to me!" He kept insisting until finally he told me I had entered a contest about 3 or 4 months ago and was picked out of around a million entries, and finally I remembered filling out something I thought was for a free T-shirt or music. Well, I did win a new Jeep C J 7 from Schlitz Beer & Rock 105. Mike had to teach me how to drive a stick shift. We moved to Port Richey, Fla after he got out of the Navy in 85, where Cara was born during hurricane Elena. When she was 2 months old, we moved back to Illinois.
I have 8 pet chickens, which is a story all itself. Mike used to raise them when he was a boy and thought our daughter would like to. Well, we all know who takes care of pets right? (Oh please mom, I�ll take care of them!) They follow me around the yard and are spoiled rotten. All the neighbor kids call me the "Chicken Lady."
I�ve been in food service for about 23 yrs. now. I�m working for Eurest Dining Service at Mossville Caterpillar. I�m currently enrolled in Masterworks from the C.I.A., "Culinary Institute of America." I�ve been teaching myself all kinds of cooking: how to make egg rolls, ravioli, tortillini & manicotti all from scratch. My dream is to one day open my own place and work for myself. : }
