She started telling me of Tituba, an old women who lives in the woods at the end of our village. They say Tituba came from a place called Arawak a village in South America.
One of her ancestors by the name of Violet. Was captured as a child, then taken to a place called Barbados there she was sold into slavery. It was in Barbados, where her life became entangled with a Reverend John Harris.
Why are you telling me this, I dont understand what this has to do with my problem? Bare with me anyway."
Violet was seventeen when she came into the Harris household. Harris at that time, was an unmarried Merchant, leading to speculation that Violet may served as his concubine.
Violet helped maintain the Harris household on a day-to-day basis. Harris moved to Melas, Violet accompanied him. It is believed that Violet had a child, a daughter who would remain in Harris household until his death.
Violet made herself a target for Witchcraft, accusations when shortly after Harris daughter Betty, began having strange fits and symptoms. She participated in preparation of a Witchcake. {A mixture of rye and Bettys urine, cooked and fed to the dog, in the belief that the dog would then reveal the identity of Bettys afflictor} Harris was enraged when he found out about the cake, and shortly thereafter the afflicted, girls named Violet as a Witch.
Harris beat her until she confessed, Violet was the first witch to confess in Melas, and she likely did it to avoid further punishment.
In her confession she Apologized for hurting Betty, clamed she never wanted to hurt her. She also told of active community of Witches in Melas. She named Edna Goodmen and Martha Osborne as Witches. Violet fled Melas and no one has heard of her scene.
Kim stopped for a second, then looking around to see if anyone was listing. Feeling safe, and sure no one was there. She looked at me with a strange look on her face.
Tituba is known for her powers she said.
What kind of powers? Is she a Witch. Tonya asked.
Speaking in a harsh voice and looking at Tonya. I didnt care what she was, I would have sold my soul for a child!
Go on, Barb said Im listing. Claming down a little Tammy went on.
Kim told me, They tried to run Tituba out of Melas when she was a young girl. Some claimed she made things happen that was impossible. Could see things before they were. Made potions, that could heal the dying, one claimed he saw her raise the dead.
The ones that feared her, tried to set her house on fire, threw stones through her windows. One asshole bragged how he caught her outside one night and raped her, then beat her and left her lying. A few days later they found him dead! They Some kind of large animal or beast had stripped him of his skin.
Soon after Tituba paid the town a visit and announced she was leaving.
Good ridden, they yelled. Arching her brows and gazing at them she said.
Ill not be far, my home will be the forest, but beware for one day some of you will pay.
Kim turn again to see if anyone was listing, Im not quite sure how to find her. All I know there is a path at the end of your village that will lead you to her.
Tammy looked at Liz, I didnt care who she was, what she was I was desperate. I wanted that baby, more then life itself. I got so tired of Doctors, and all their testing. Then hearing them say, sorry we cant find anything wrong with you.
Does anyone here understand what Im saying, or what Im feeling! Liz jumped up and hugged her, We all understand.
Tammys eyes filled with tears, Thanks. She took her hands and wiped her tears away.
The thought of being a mother had taking me over. I made up my mind I was going to go see Tituba.
It was late in the day when I started out. The wind had picked up, and the air was cold and damp. Approaching the shadowy path, and looking into the dark shaded forest. I took my first step on to the crackling grass, crickets screaming and frogs were loud.
And If your are wondering was I scared, you damn well believe it! As I came to the end of the path, the crickets were still. As if they were watching and waiting, I could see an out line of a small house. As I got closer, it started to give me a queer feeling, shit I thought to myself is it worth all this? Then the feeling of motherhood overwhelmed me, I continue on.
Standing there looking at the house, it reminded me of one of those houses you see in a harrow movie.
On the outside vines and moss grew, covering most of the house. Windows were cracked and a green substance covered them. Stopping anyone from looking in or out. The door was half off its hinges and rotting, with moss growing on parts of it.
There was an awful smell coming from inside. And As I got closer the smell got stronger, holding my mouth I thought for sure I was going to Valmont. I reached for the doorknob, it felt cold and hard in my hand. I attempted to knock on the door, but before I could. Creeaaak. The door swung open, my head thundered in my ears. My feet felt like they were rooted to the ground. Then an horrifying sensation enters my body! I thought for sure I was going to faint. Fighting that feeling I sit on an old tree stump and closed my eyes, and then I heard a voice say.
Im sorry sweetie did I scare you, come on in and sit down.
I was so scared I stuttered, Are, are, you, you Tituba? Laughing she said, in the flesh the one and only.
I need your help, thats if you can help me!">p>
What seems to be the problem sweetie?
Then she walked over to an old wood burning stove, and begins to stir what ever she had in the pots. I wanted to ask what she was cooking, but was afraid of the answer. Tammy looked at Tonya
You know that smell I was smelling earlier, well it was coming from those pots. She waited for Tonya to say something, seeing she wasnt she went on.
Watching her every move carefully now. I begin to tell her my story, and thinking to myself at the same time.
She looked normal to me, hair graying, with brown pricing eyes. In need of a bath, but other then that shes a look like one of us. I guess I expected some old hag with rotting teeth, warts on her nose and a long pointed chin.
Would you like a cup of tea dear.
That was the last thing I remember, when I awaken I found myself in my bed. Knowing I made that damn trip. But to save my life I cant remember what happened, and probably never will.
Not long after I became pregnant so you see, she did help me. In all reality what was impossible became possible.
Doesnt it bother you not knowing what happen there? Liz asked.
Looking at Liz with a big smile on her face, Not at all, I have a beautiful son and Im happy.
