Jonathan's Story

This is a wonderful story of love and miracles. It actually happened. Jonathan’s mother just died recently and I know that she would want us to continue to tell his story.

Jonathan was 2 years old and was diagnosed with a malignant tumor on his aorta. Without treatment, he would surely die. With treatment, he might die anyway. His loving parents decided to have him treated.

On a day in May, his mother took him to Sick Children’s Hospital in Toronto for his treatment. Meanwhile, everyone in our church and all prayer groups in our city and others had been asked to pray for him. Some of us went and knelt in the pews during the time he was to be treated. Most of us that knew him were young parents and we were all devastated, but we knew that God would answer our prayers.

The next day we got a call from Mary. Jonathan was miraculously healed. This is how it happened to Mary. She was sitting in a waiting room while Jonathan was in for his treatment. She heard a voice say “Mary, I’m finished with Jonathan now.” She looked around to see who had spoken to her, but no one was there. She went to the nurse’s desk and asked there if anyone had called her. They told her, no, that there was no intercom in the waiting room.

Thinking that she was just tired and had heard nothing, Mary went back to the waiting room and continued to read. This time, very clearly, she heard, “Mary, I’m finished with Jonathan, NOW.” She suddenly got up, went to the nurse’s desk and demanded to be taken to the treatment room. The nurses were hesitant but decided to let her go.

When Mary got to the room, Jonathan was sitting up on the examining table and they were having trouble getting him to lie down. The doctors said that they had given him a very strong sedative, but Jonathan was not responding. Mary said firmly, “I want you to X-ray him now.”

The doctor turned to her and replied that they had just taken a series of X-rays before they brought him into the treatment room. Mary insisted, “Take another set of X-rays right now.”

So, to humor a seemingly distraught woman, the doctors obliged. They looked at the new set of X-rays. They frowned and took another set of X-rays. Then they laid out the films on tables in a conference room. One set was taken a month before when the diagnosis was first made. It showed a large tumor. The second set was taken an hour before he was to begin treatment. It also showed a large tumor. The third set, double-checked, taken when Mary insisted, showed a clear film, no tumor at all.

Many doctors and technicians were called in to look at these X-rays. Every one of them left the room shaking their heads. Mary and her husband took Jonathan home and he never had another problem. They received a letter from the doctor in charge a short time later. He said that there was no precedent in his career for instantaneous remission, so the only conclusion he could draw from the incident was that it was a “miracle”.

Now we all know that God does not save the lives of everyone we pray for. Sometimes miraculous healing is not his will. But that day, God’s will was to spare the life of a young child. In so doing He taught us things. We grew stronger, our prayer group was uplifted and we were able to praise His holy name with a much louder voice. Hallelujah!!!
