Alma' Story

In the year of 1984, I worked as a factory worker in a garmet factory in Kentucky.

I was sitting all day and pain began in my right pelvis. After seeing doctor after doctor from town to town, there seemed nothing could be done for all the pain I experienced.

My family physician admitted me to one local hospital and then to another as an outpatient for a bone scan. The results from the bone scan were a tumor in the right pelvis.

I was sent to a hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, for a biopsy, and the results of the biopsy were chondrosarcoma. From there I was referred to University Hospitals in Columbus, Ohio, and was a patient for five weeks, at which time I had extensive surgery by Dr. Lawrence D. Weis. When I was discharged from the hospital, I was in a body cast for four months. During the four months my family physician made frequent trips to my home.

I returned to University Hospitals in October, 1984, at which time the body cast was removed.

April, 1986, I had a reoccurrence of the same problem, and was admitted again to University Hospitals, at which time my right leg was amputated. Twelve days later I had surgery on my lung and two malignant modules were removed. In May, 1986, I was discharged from the hospital.

Through the help of my husband, children and family, I began walking with a walker and crutches. I was getting along real good, and I had two more reoccurrences. August, 1987, I had to go back to University Hospitals for surgery on the urethra. April, 1988, I had to have a kidney removed by Dr. William Farrar.

Since April, 1988, I have not had any more surgery and have recovered remarkably. I do about whatever I want to; I take care of my house, cook, clean and sometimes I even strip tobacco. I have done a lot of babysitting. My favorite thing to do in the summer is swimming.

I totally thank my church, family and friends for the prayers and help they have given me. Through all the pain and suffering I have had a rewarding life. After ten years of being well and taking care of myself, I owe a great deal to all at the University Medical Center, especially the doctors and nurses that worked on my case.
