Ethan Allen and the Green-Mountain Heroes of '76, with a Sketch of the Early History of Vermont - Henry W. DePuy. The life of Ethan Allen, "Hero of Ticonderoga", is detailed. Exciting narratives describe his leadership of the "Green- Mountain Boys" and his plans for attacks, exploits, and battles. He became an author and an "agent" from Vermont to Congress. Vermont declared independence as a state, and formed their own constitution after Congress refused to receive them. Eventually, Vermont was admitted as an "Independent State" in 1789. This book is important for historians and those who yearn to understand the chronological history of early Vermont and America's fight for independence. The Knowledge of Mankind: The Vermont Journal and the Universal Advertiser, 1783-1786 - Milli S. Kenney. "From Realms far distant, and from Climes unknown, / We make the Knowledge of Mankind your own." So it says under the masthead of the Vermont Journal and the Universal Advertiser, first published by Hough & Spooner in August 1763. This volume is intended to be another source of information for historians and genealogists after the town histories and vital records have been searched. It contains lists of hundreds of delinquent taxpayers in addition to numerous fascinating articles. The Vermont Journal included news from those who chose to have their names in print, but more often the news published was of people who had no say in the matter, i.e., jail breaks, accident victims and obituaries.

An appendix lists the dates, clerks, hosts and locations of the proprietors meetings, where the delinquent taxpayers were dealt with or the business of the township was discussed. An index of subjects and a fullname index make this book easy to use. Also includes a map of Vermont dated 1796. 1997, 257 pp., map, append., fullname index, subject index, paper, $21.50 #ZK154
