Welcome to the Massachusetts Part 2 - Reference Books

Journals of the House of Representatives of Massachusetts, 1715-1717, Volume 1 - Massachusetts Historical Society. This exact reprint represents the birth of journaling in the House. "Stung by a slighting comment passed by Governor Dudley on their proceedings, the members of the House determined to print the full Journal of the session, as the best defence of themselves. Thus began the practice of printing the Journals of the House which was continued in an almost unbroken series till the Revolutionary War." General Court sections are grouped by year (1715-1716, 1716-1717 and 1717-1718) and individual sessions. These daily minutes contain the names of citizens presenting grievances and petitions, including debt issues, petitions to purchase land, settle land and form townships; fees paid to court employees, allowances for disabled citizens and money granted for town improvements from the Public Treasury; estate tax , excise tax, and Indian issues. (1919) reprint, 291 pp., original fullname, plus subject index, paper, $24.50 #M078

History of Gardner, Massachusetts, from its Earliest Settlement to 1860 - Lewis Glazier. The text provides an informative survey of the development of the town as well as a considerable body of genealogical material. An excerpt from Lincoln's History of Worcester County gives a detailed account of insurrections in Massachusetts following the Revolution. A lengthy section on early family history lists every family line known to have been established in Gardner prior to 1800. The tax list of 1853 is reprinted along with a table of representatives to Gardner's annual town meeting, 1785-1859. Additional lists include a roster of Gardner's militia and the Gardner Greys regiment, justices of the peace, medical practitioners, victims of fires and lightning strikes, and deaths up to 1858. Charlestown Land Records, 1638-1802 - Record Commissioners of the City of Boston. Some 300 entries describing land holdings, transactions and disputes appear as in the original folios, with a short introduction and preforatory note from the Commissioners An extensive index of full names, estates, and pertinent subject matter has been appended. The History of Haverhill, Massachusetts - Benjamin L. Mirick. A detailed history of the town's early times with about half the volume devoted to the seventeenth century. Many early settlers are named. An appendix provides lists of ministers, college graduates, and representatives to the legislature. There is also a directory listing the "Professional Gentlemen," merchants, manufacturers, mechanics, etc. (1832) reprint, 237 pp., new index, paper, $26.00 #ZM363

The History of Bridgewater, Massachusetts - Nahum Mitchell. This is a facsimile reprint of the author's 1840 "History of Bridgewater, in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, including an extensive Family Register." Bridgewater was the first interior settlement in Old Plymouth Colony, and as such has great historical and genealogical interest. The first 84 pages of this fascinating volume recount the early history and settlement of the town. Some topics receiving attention include land divisions, ecclesiastical affairs, wars and various physical features; the information ranges in date from the initial land grant to the early years of the 19th century. The initial grant was made to Duxbury in 1645, and settlement began soon after 1650. There were 56 original grantees; each of these has been named and other than William Bradford (son of the Governor), all were from Duxbury. Eighteen members of this original group became permanent settlers. In 1656 Duxbury New Plantation, as it was then called, was incorporated as a separate town with its present name, Bridgewater. The bulk of the book is comprised by its "Family Register," more than 300 pages of genealogical material on the settlers and their descendants down to about 1800. Entries are arranged alphabetically by surname. Information commonly found within entries is data on marriages, often including maiden names, and names and birth dates of children. Also included may be death dates, details on families and occupations, and names of towns from which individuals located to Bridgewater from, and where, if applicable, they emigrated to. About 270 pages are allocated to town residents, which are supplemented by about 35 pages of genealogies of non-resident families with strong ties to the town. If the original edition of this fine history had one significant deficiency, it was the complete lack of an index. Heritage Books, Inc. has remedied that flaw in this edition, by the addition of a complete everyname index. (1840) reprint, 456 pp., new index, paper, $33.00 #ZM373

Records of the Colony of New Plymouth in New England, Vol. 9: Acts of the Commissioners of the United Colonies of New England, 1643-1651 - David Pulsifer. Continuing the body of work begun by Nathaniel Shurtleff, David Pulsifer presents the ninth volume in this series of vital historical records for the colony of New Plymouth. The documents contained herein were transcribed from handwritten originals, only a few folios of which survived the fire that consumed the Boston Court House in December 1747. What remains of these records constitutes an invaluable resource for historians, illustrating the workings of colonial government in remarkable detail. The text is divided into four major sections-"Agreement Respecting the Bounds Betwixt Plymouth and Massachusetts," "Articles of Confederation," "Acts of the Commissioners" and "Petition of Humphrey Johnson, and Answer of the Court Thereto"-with a general index of names, subjects and localities. The majority of the text is concerned with the resolution of land disputes between the neighboring colonies, and the maintenance of royal authority in the region. Relations with neighboring Indian tribes and treaties are also discussed at length as well as the more mundane procedures of the colonial government, such as appointments of commissioners, organization and dissolution of committees, proceedings of the courts, transcriptions of speeches, and acquisition of resources for the colonies. (1859) reprint, 237 pp., original fullname plus subject index, paper, $21.00 #ZP847

Part Three, gives biographies of the accusers and the accused with genealogical connections which help to explain why certain family groups were targeted for witchcraft accusation. 1992, 374 pages, illus., bibl., index, paper, $31.50 #ZR503

The Massachusetts Bay Company and its Predecessors - Frances Rose-Troup. An understanding of the early history of the American colonies is incomplete without the early history of Massachusetts, and this in turn is incomplete without the history of the Massachusetts Bay Company. The author begins by stating that "The early history of the Massachusetts Bay Company has never been fully elucidated; the few records remaining have frequently been misinterpreted, causing confusion so that the course of events is not clearly understood." To understand Massachusetts in the early 17th century it is necessary to deal with three companies, The Massachusetts Bay Company, The New England Company and The Dorchester Company, whose inception was in a great measure the result of events upon the Plymouth Plantation. The Dorchester company was formed about 1623 by a group of Plymouth Plantation adventurers headed by Rev. John White, in opposition to some religious conditions in the Plymouth Plantation. The Dorchester group established a plantation on Cape Ann, so that when Plymouth planters led by Miles Standish landed there in 1624, they found the shore occupied by a considerable body of men who disputed their claim. The Dorchester Company, having, through misfortune, failed to accomplish its object, ceased to exist in 1626. About a year later, a few members of the company who had not lost faith in the ultimate success of their purpose ("the propagation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ...") formed the New England Company. It is interesting to note that the list of subscribers to this enterprise was headed by Sir Richard Saltonstall, whose family genealogy is presented elsewhere in this catalog (Ancestry and Descendants of Sir Richard Saltonstall of New England by Richard Saltonstall, #ZS047). As word of the success of this venture spread, men of "competent estates" began to consider emigrating. In about 1628, Sir Richard Saltonstall, Isaac Johnson and a number of others made an effort to obtain a charter for the Massachusetts Bay Company. The last chapter is a list of adventurers, with biographical sketches. Here readers will find most of the names in the book, and the original fullname index makes them easier to locate. (1930) reprint, 176 pp., bibl., original fullname index, original place name index, original subject index, paper, $18.50 #ZR574

Paxton, Massachusetts, Births, Marriages and Deaths, 1748-1850 - Paul A. Russell and Marcia L. Membrino. Located in the northwest corner of Worcester County, MA, Paxton is still known as the "hill town" because of its high elevation. Rich with history, the town can date its original settlement back to the mid-17th century. This valuable text fills a gap in available Massachusetts source records -- for unlike those of many Massachusetts towns, Paxton's vital records have remained unpublished since their recording. Here, for the first time researchers can find an alphabetical listing of Paxton's births, marriages and deaths from 1748 to 1850. Also included is the 100-page History of Paxton by Ledyard Bill, first published in 1889. Prefatory material reviews town origins and settlement; a discussion of town population is enhanced by several graphs. Then, in three sections 1,684 Paxton births, 349 Paxton marriages (in two lists, one organized by brides' names and one by grooms'), and 633 Paxton deaths are alphabetically recorded. Births are listed by child's name, and information given includes birthdate, birthplace and parents' names; notations identify twins or unusual births. Marriage records date back to 1784; recorded information includes names of bride and groom, residence, and date of marriage. Death records date back to 1756; recorded information includes (when available) name of deceased, age at death, death date, survivors, marital status and cause of death. Annexed to the end of these vital records is The History of Paxton, which not only traces town history but also is filled with biographical sketches containing much genealogical data on the town's residents. An everyname index has been added to simplify data retrieval from this text. The book also contains a few maps of Paxton and one of Worcester County, and an 1839 engraving of Paxton Meeting House and Common. Dr. Russell is the chair of the History-Political Science Department at Anna Maria College; Ms. Membrino is a 1996 Anna Maria graduate whose participation in a campus "public-service project" has led to her collaboration on this work effort. 1996 new material plus (1889) reprint, 151 pp., 8.5x11, illus., maps, bibl., new index, paper, $23.00 #ZR877

Berkley, Massachusetts, Cemetery Inscriptions - Gail E. Terry. In compiling this collection of inscriptions, the author has set out to fill an information void for the past, present and future citizens of Berkley, Massachusetts, or anyone with ties to the area. In the process of gathering the material presented, she visited all locations where grave stones are known to exist. Chapters have been dedicated to 24 cemeteries and other various stones which were found to exist independently. All inscriptions have been transcribed here as completely as possible. Stones on which the inscriptions are broken or unclear have been marked as such and all legible text has been included. Due to time and nature there are inevitable cases of stones which have deteriorated to such an extent that inscriptions no longer exist, and even cases where stones are missing altogether. In her efforts to make this work as exhaustive as humanly possible, the author performed extensive research to shed light upon these lost memorials. Space at the beginning of each chapter has been allocated for whatever information has been found through examining the works of past historians, historical society records and interviews with a number of local citizens. The location of each cemetery is described both at the beginning of each chapter and with a map at the beginning of the book. There is a surname index to assist the genealogical researcher or any reader seeking to take advantage of this new and valuable source of information. 1997, 230 pp., index, paper, $20.00 #ZT166

A History of the Myricks United Methodist Church - Gail E. Terry. The history of the Myricks United Methodist Church, located in Berkley, Massachusetts, is a topic not only of interest to the author, but of personal significance. Mrs. Terry's grandmother was a lifelong member of the church and "served as Church Historian for many years." It was through this relationship that she first became interested in the subject. Upon realization that there was no written history of the church, she began this work to present a source of information on the "church and community." In the process of compiling this information, she accessed a number of sources, including the church records and articles, newspaper articles, earlier books and a local historical society. The Myricks United Methodist Church was established in the middle of the 19th century, and therefore this book covers about 150 years of the church and its members. The book begins with a chapter giving a brief history of the church as it was established in Myricks. Throughout the remainder of the book, Mrs. Terry paints a well-rounded picture of its history through the examination of the various aspects and activities of which the church consists. Among the topics discussed are the physical structure, in its various stages; the membership, including complete lists from a number of years; the ministers; the worship service and the roles of individuals therein; and Bible school. Complementing the text are more than 35 illustrations of the church and church members and a surname index. Church histories, such as this one, provide a valuable view of the communities in which they exist and the individuals who give them life. This insightful history has been written with an understanding of the Myricks United Methodist Church, its members are and the influences that have helped shape them. 1997, 147 pp., illus., index, paper, $16.00 #ZT167

Myricks, Massachusetts: A Farming Settlement, A Railroad Village - Gail E. Terry. First settled around 1713, the small farming community of Myricks is named after one of the earliest families to settle in this section of Berkley in Bristol County, Massachusetts. The author's grandmother, Marian (Brailey) Stetson collected articles, pictures, memorabilia and other items on the history of Myricks for more than forty years. With this information as a foundation, Ms. Terry has compiled an extensive history of Myricks that also includes a Myricks family genealogy. The settlement of the town is described and shown with several maps. Lists of farmers, current and previous street names and detailed notes by the author establish the town's early identity. The coming of the railroads, starting in 1839, brought new prosperity to the town. There were also some spectacular train accidents. A chapter about the Methodist church contains a list of ministers, and the chapter about schools contains several lists of teachers and a short history of each school. But the big event every year in Myricks was the Cattle Show and Fair, to which another chapter is devoted. The book also gives a wealth of information about fires, cemeteries, businesses, organizations and other facts. The volume abounds with names and includes a subject and surname index. The Myrick Genealogy begins with Samuel, born 29 January 1687. Fifty illustrations include maps, homesteads, drawings, documents, landmarks, schools, ads and much, much more! A delightful book. 1998, 200 pp., illus., surname plus subject index, $21.50 #ZT165

Old Naumkeag: An Historical Sketch of the City of Salem - C. H. Webber and W. S. Nevins. The area originally known as Naumkeag comprised that portion of Essex County, Massachusetts, later divided into the city of Salem and the towns of Marblehead, Peabody, Danvers, Beverly, Manchester, Wenham, Topsfield and Middleton. Located about 15 miles northeast of Boston, this area may be best known for the witchcraft trials of the 1600s. The history of Naumkeag begins in 1626 when Roger Conant established a Puritan settlement on the mouth of the Naumkeag River. Unlike the colonists who established themselves at Plymouth a few years earlier, the Naumkeag settlers were not true separatists from the Church of England, but wished only to separate themselves from its corruption. In 1629 the name "Salem" (meaning "peace") was substituted for Naumkeag, and within a year there occurred the first use of a ballot in the colonies, in the selection of a pastor and teacher. Also at that time was established the first Protestant Church in America. After a chapter about the settlement of Salem, the book presents seven chapters on its continuing history, then one chapter each on Marblehead, Beverly, Manchester and Wenham, one on Danvers and Peabody and one on Topsfield and Middleton. Readers will learn the true-life location of the wreck of the Hesperus. The everyname and subject index includes nearly a thousand entries, organized by town name. (1877) reprint, 311 pp., illus., maps, everyname plus subject index, paper, $25.50 #ZW101

History of the Town of Lynnfield, Mass. 1635-1895 - Thomas B. Wellman. The town of Lynnfield is in the western part of Essex County, located just north of Boston, Massachusetts. Whosoever wishes to "see who have walked these streets, who have played within these limits...who have worshipped God in these temples, who have received instructions in these schools, who have roamed these fields, who have been nurtured, married, enjoyed the joys and sorrows of life within these homes, who have gone afar off, have died or are still living," is invited to study this volume about Lynnfield, Massachusetts. It is a meticulous work written by Mr. Wellman out of pure dedication and love for New England's splendor. His intention was to bring as much enjoyment to the reader as he received while writing it. The book first examines the topographical appearance and nature of the town. Next we read about the oldest houses and some haunting stories that bring them to life. Then there are the town's cornerstones: the old meeting-house, the town hall, and the old schools, all of which brought the people together through religion and education. The following two chapters are the annals from 1635 through 1800 replete with personal accounts, legends, specific dates, records and background of how the town of Lynnfield was shaped. The second half of the book has a more somber tone, beginning with the town's cemeteries and their eternal inhabitants, gravestone inscriptions and funerals. The next few chapters cover the Revolutionary War, ecclesiastical history, Lynnfield's dates of establishment, the War of 1812 and the Civil War. This volume ends with chapters on the town's founding families and chronicles of the 19th century; an appendix of sundry facts and statistics; and a new everyname index. Nearly fifty photographs and a plethora of poetic odes give the text a refreshing air. Also available on CD-ROM!
