Hawley Families in America: Descendants of Benjamin Hawley of Chester County, Pennsylvania - Raymond G. Hawley. Benjamin Hawley was born to Thomas and Francis (Maling) Hawley on October 5, 1703, in London, England. To escape prejudice against his Quaker faith, he moved to the American colonies at the age of 18, landing in Pennsylvania in 1722. He returned to England several times over the years, including a trip in the winter of 1729-1730, during which he married Dinah Gabiter. After returning to North America, Peter and Dinah settled in Birmingham Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. They had six children. Peter practiced farming and teaching, and he remained influential in the Quaker religion throughout his life. He died on July 29, 1782.

Hawley Families in America: Descendants of Peter Hawley of Montgomery County, Virginia - Raymond G. Hawley. Peter Hawley was born c.1753, probably in New England. Sometime before 1777, he had moved to Orange County, Virginia, because in that year he enlisted in the 2nd Virginia Line under Col. William Brent. He served in the Revolutionary War battles of Stony Point and Monmouth. He and his wife, Mary (Carter) Hawley, had 11 children. He was jailed for debts late in life, and he died in 1834 in Christiansburg, Montgomery County, Virginia.
