Thursday, 28 JanuaryColombian President Andres Pastrana orders a military crackdown in his earthquake-torn city after a day of looting and rioting by survivors of the tremor that killed at least 883 people. Pastrana flew into Armenia Wednesday vowing to impose order and speed up relief to about 250,000 people left homeless by the quake. 2,000 soldiers and 700 police would be brought in to control gangs of looters still roaming the streets. US warplanes attack five targets in northern Iraq�s no-fly zone Tuesday after being fired on by Iraqi forces, claims the US Defence Department. Two F15E fighter jets drop bombs after being targeted by Iraqi anti-aircraft artillery systems near Mosul in northern Iraq. Earlier, US jets attacked two other radar sites and an anti-aircraft system near Mosul after being fired on. Lindsay Davenport and Anne Mauresmo advance to the semi-finals of the Australian Open. Davenport, the world #1, overcomes Venus Williams 4&0, while Mauresmo shocks the 11th seed Dominique Van Roost 3&6. In the men's event, Thomas Enqvist beats Marc Rosset in straight sets, while Ecuador's Nicholas Lapentti downs 7th seed Karol Kuchera 8-6 in the final set. Only one seed will make the semis. |

Wayne Gretzky put on a show in what might be his last NHL all-star game, leading North America to an 8-6 victory over the World team. The New York Rangers centre has rewritten the NHL record book over his 20-year career. He has a goal and two assists in the victory, then says he will keep the car he got for being named player of the game. |

Five hours after senators hear Clinton�s legal defence, those same legislators are in the awkward position of cheerleaders as they listened to him make his case with a voter-friendly State of the Union speech. "TeleChobis," Mexican broadcaster TV Azteca's look-alike answer to the hit kid's show "Teletubbies," is being sued by Ragdoll, the original's producer, and its US distributor. The lawsuit seeks the removal of "TeleChobis" from Azteca's daily slate and an unspecified sum in legal costs and damages. "We tried to avoid litigation by asking Azteca to take the show off the air," says distributor David Levinee. Tear it down, burn it or maybe even bomb it. The verdict from many Montrealers is decisive - the city�s troubled Olympic Stadium should be put out of its misery. Where they differ is on the demolition method.
