Weekend 5: February 3-6

A big week for modern rock new releases. Red Hot Chili Peppers Otherside is the third single lifted from Californication, and comes with the video on the CD. Korn's Falling Away From Us is the first release from their Issues album. Death In Vegas are a British arty-pop act - Aisha features the vocals of Iggy Pop. I'd like all three to go top 10; realistically, Korn to the top 15, RHCP to 30, DiV just into the 40.

New dance singles are led by the Tamperer's Hammer to the Heart. Sampling ABBA, this features the lack of subtlety that has became the group's trademark on their top 5 hits in 1998. This should repeat that success. Sash! returns with Adelante; the flavour of the year in 1997 fell out of fashion last year, but should still go top 20 with this tune. Sisquo, former lead singer with Dru Hill, has a solo record out, Got to Get It, but will be lucky to make any impression.

Pop this week? Hepburn's back, but a lack of promotion might reduce them to a sub-40 hit. Fierce make another needless cover of Anita Baker's classic Sweet Love; ceaseless play and the lack of taste of their fans should propel this into the top 10. Brit Pack is a bunch of actors from the West End who hope to hit it big. This may well be one boy band that bombs.

Other stuff. Watch out for Raissa's How Long do I Get? - this London chanteuse should be going places. Underground dance gurus Tomski and Joey Negro both return, and there's something new from 60s crooner Andy Williams. Raissa top 30, none of the others to make it.

D'Angelo's Voodoo unseats Santana's Supernatural from the top of the US albums list. The set debuts at #1 on 321,000 copies sold. Also opening strong are The Lox's set We Are The Streets, which bows at #5, and III, Guy's first album in nine years, which opens at #13.
Rounding out the rest of the top five, Supernatural falls to #2 and Dr. Dre's Dr. Dre 2001 holds at #3. Celine Dion's collection All The Way ... A Decade Of Song drop two spots to #4.
Other albums making significant debuts include the soundtrack to Scream 3 at #33, and Hypnotize Camp Posse's Three 6 Mafia Presents Hypnotize Camp Posse at #36. Moby's set Play finally enters the top 100 after six months on release, rocketing from 110 to 91. British interest is confined to Sting's Brand New Day (61-71) and Bush's The Science Of Things (77-80). Charlotte Church slips 63-92 and her Voice of an Angel comes 67-99. Charlotte still leads the Classical Crossover charts.
Best seller on the Internet Album listing is Woman of Faith's Extravagant Grace, which has signally failed to reach the top 200 on the main listing.

Over on the Billboard Hot 100, Savage Garden's I Knew I Loved You enjoys a third week at #1, staving off a huge leap forward by Mariah Carey's Thank God I Found You. The track, which features Joe and 98 Degrees, leaps from #22 to #2 after a single became available to buy. Christina Aguilera's What A Girl Wants falls to #3, followed by Montell Jordan's Get On Tonite at #4, climbing one spot, and Santana's Smooth at #5, down two. Blink-182's All The Small Things makes a big jump from #15 to #7, while another Santana tune, Maria Maria, debuts strongly at #15. At #35, Sisqo's Thong Song is the chart's greatest gainer, climbing from 63.
One British act: Sonique climbs 30-23 with Never Let You Go. D'Angelo's How Does it Feel moves 35-26, Sugar Ray's Falls Apart 40-34, Eminem's Forget About Dre 47-36. Top 50 entries for Vertical Horizon's Everything You Want (46) and Snoop Dogg's G'd Up (47)

New leaders on the MuchMusic Countdown, with Eifell 65's Blue (Da Ba Dee) succeeding the Foo Fighters at the top spot. Christina Aguilera and the Backstreet Boys' Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely both climb two places to 3 and 4 respectively. There are major climbs for the Matthew Good Band (Load Me Up 11-7) and Britney Spears (From the Bottom of my Broken Hear 12-8) as well as sole British entries S Club 7 (Bring It All Back 16-12). The Red Hot Chili Peppers' Otherside is the fastest climber, moving 24-19. New entries from N'Sync (Bye Bye Bye 25) and Blink 182 (All the Small Things 27)

Weekend 6: February 10-13

Anyone challenging the Mancunian s*ds is destined to second fiddle, and records from Shania and Mariah were both pulled from release late in the day. Eiffel 65 heads the challengers, Move Your Body follows up last year's massive smash by the simple expedient of being Blue Part Two. Top 10.
We've new Hepburn, Deep Deep Down features a video extracted from the band's recent appearance on Buffy. There's new Ian Brown, Dolphins Are Monkeys is almost indistinguishable from Oasis, which is not promising for him. And there's a second release from Blaque, Bring It All To Me is an ultra-cool slice of R&B. Top 20, 30, 40 respectively.
Hoping against hope for a decent entry is My Life Story, now signed to Lord Loud-Webby's record label. Walk / Don't Walk is one song, and shows that the band is not going to change on us. A miss, but a great tune.

Distribution of many singles is affected by Richard Branson's pigheadedness. The bearded blunder has refused to order releases from a number of major labels for his Vermin and His Price chains, which is expected to reduce Hepburn from a top 10 sales entry to around #20. Branson's bone of contention is that the companies involved are offering better rates to competitors selling records via the internet. The losers in this whole debacle are the rising stars that Branson has previously championed, and the consumers in many towns where His Price has a monopoly on record sales.

Pop News is led by the Spice Girls' week in court. The Italian makers of a scooter signed a contract with the fab five (as they were), only to be hit by Geri's exit from the band within weeks. They're suing the five for lost profits and wasted ad spend; the Spices are counter-suing for payments owing for the campaign. Emma Bunton took the witness stand on Wednesday, and said that the girls led hectic lives and often spoke flippantly to each other. She denied claims that she knew Geri would leave when they signed the agreement. Outside the court, Overcute Spice lambasted the court artist, who made her look like mass murderer Myra Hindley.
Geri herself popped up in court Friday, and said that the other Spices may not have taken her seriously. The inference was that the passage in her autobiography "If Only" was more exagguration than fact, which undermines confidence in the rest of the work. We'll be keeping a close eye on the remaindered books stores for sightings of Geri.

At the East Coast Music Awards, Newfoundland rockers Great Big Sea kept their title as Entertainer of the Year for the fifth straight year. "We're very lucky to have won this award once and to win it five times is almost unbelievable," squeezebox player Bob Hallett said as he accepted the award. The Celtic rock band also won for Album of the Year and Group of the Year.
Lead singer Alan Doyle thanked their loyal following as he accepted the silver trophy shaped like a treble clef for the band's album Turn. "The greatest group of fans that Canada has ever seen is Great Big Sea fans," said Doyle, clad in a black leather jacket, black shirt and blazing orange pants. "We thank them very much."
Other big winners came from Cape Breton, including John Gracie, Male Artist of the Year, and fiddler Natalie MacMaster, Female Artist of the Year. MacMaster also won Roots/Traditional Artist of the Year. "It feels great," said MacMaster, who thanked her family and Cape Breton roots for inspiring her fiddling.
Newfoundland's Kim Stockwood won two of her six nominations, winning for best Pop/Rock Artist, and Single of the Year, for 12 Years Old. "I don't know if you know this, but I've never won an award before," Stockwood exclaimed. "Thank you to anyone who's ever been nice to me in my life."

Fraiser Moss, chief designer for YMC, said how �appalled� he was that pop band Steps appeared on stage and in publicity photos wearing his clothes. �I would happily have worked with the Spice Girls or Take That, but Steps is so boring, and most of today�s music is horrendous.� Moss then singled out soap star turned failed pop star Adam Rickett for criticism, proving that he�s not just taking cheap shots at the famous.

Christina Aguilera hit back at recent press coverage of a spat between herself and the surgically enhanced Birtney Spears, claiming that the two are as different as chalk and particularly stinky Red Leicester. �It�s all the papers hyping nothing up. We love each other really, and our careers are going to go in different directions,� said the former Mousketeer. This caused some confusion here, where �down� is broadly indistinguishable from �down�.
Singing Birtney Spears dolls went on sale in the UK this week, complete with a slot in the back where one can plug in a cartridge that will make the doll perform one of Spear's vast repetoire of hit. Though the doll does not come with breast enhancements, a similar effect can be achieved with plastacene or papier mache. Reports that the dolls regularly come with expensive rings hidden in the back are denied by the makers, who are confused by the origin of this internet rumour.

Another new Internet music site launched on Thursday, with more glitz than content. Mezzmusic held a big launch party somewhere in London, where music celebs were thin on the ground. They wheeled out George Michael's cousin, but he's a major backer of the project, which will pipe concerts and live DJ sets around to pubs and clubs worldwide, for an appropriately hefty fee. Celeb rent-a-quote Paul McKenna said it was a good idea, but was flummoxed when a reporter pointed out that this would mean fewer opportunities for up-and-coming acts to perform or spin.

D'Angelo's Voodoo retains the top spot on the US albums list this week, once again fending off stiff competition from Santana's Supernatural, which holds at #2. For the second consecutive week, Dr Dre's Dr Dre 2001 and Celine Dion's All The Way ... A Decade Of Song remain at #3 and #4, respectively.
Climbers in the top 10 include Christina Aguilera's self-titled album, up one spot to #5, Eiffel 65's Europop leaps two to #6, and Kid Rock's Devil Without A Cause moves up one rung to #10.
High debuts this week are led by Snoop Dogg & tha Eastsidaz' Snoop Dogg Presents Tha Eastsidaz (sic) a #8 hit. Tina Turner's Twenty Four Seven bows at #21, with Wynonna's debut, New Day Dawning, at #40.
Other albums making significant moves include the Disney soundtrack to Tarzan, rebounding from #135 to #55, Slipknot's self-titled album, which jumps from #107 to #94, and Ginuwine's 100% Ginuwine, which rockets from #115 to #99. The British entries: Sting's Brand New Day (73 from 71) and Bush's The Science Of Things (80-85). Both Charlotte Church's albums leave the top 100, but the eponymous album remains atop the Classical Crossover chart.

Another Santana song, Maria Maria featuring The Product G&B, springs into the #8 slot. N 'Sync's Bye Bye Bye moves from #19 to #14.
Debuts include two classics; Madonna's cover of Don McLean's American Pie bows at #43, Kid Rock's Only God Knows Why debuts at #63, Macy Gray's I Try finally enters at #68, and Hoku's Another Dumb Blonde premieres at #69. ObBrit: Sonique's It Feels So Good moves 23-19.

The Counting Crows' Hanginaround moves to the top of the MuchMoreMusic Countdown, ahead of Lauryn and Bob's Turn Your Lights Down Low and George Michael's Roxanne. Santana's Maria Maria and Sting's Desert Rose climb into the top 10. Blue Rodeo is the fastest climber, from 21 to 16 with Somebody Waits. Four place climbs for Faith Hill (12), McMaster and James (14), Third Eye Blind (19) and Damhait Doyle (20). Plenty of new entries: Shania Twain's Come On Over (22), Macy Gray's I Try (24), Enrique Iglesias' Be With You (25) and J Gaines and the Soul Attorneys' Better Man (28).

The MuchMusic Countdown sees Christina Aguilera's What A Girl Wants rise to the top, four weeks after it left the lead south of the border. The Backstreet Boys climb 2 to 2, with Eifell 65 from the top to 3. The Matthew Good Band's Load Me Up and Britney Spears' From the Bottom of my Broken Heart climb three to 4 and 5 respectively. Our Lady Peace Is Anybody Home and S Club 7 Bring it All Back crack the top 10. N'Sync's Bye Bye Bye is the fastest climber, from 25 to 18. Filter's Take A Picture (23), the Smashing Pumpkins' Everlasting Gaze (27) and Third Eye Blind Never Let You Go (29) are the new entries.

George Michael, Sting and S Club 7 are British acts; the others are All Saints' Pure Shores (MM 22) and Coors' Radio (MMM 8).

Weekend 7: February 17-20

New Releases are led by pop acts. The All Saints' Pure Shores is from the new Leo-flick "The Beach", but missed a great opportunity by failing to put the video on the single. Christina Aguilera tries to keep up with the Spears by releasing What a Girl Wants - already an airplay favourite, but not as good a song as "Genie". A1 is this week's boy band. We predict 1-2-5 between these tracks.

Credibility comes from the eels' Mr e's Beautiful Blues, the most upbeat thing they've ever recorded. It's not the next "Susan's House", but it's great. Should go top 20.

Dancers can look for Jay-Z, Air, Bellatrix and Baby Bumps, while someone will be buying Aqua's Cartoon Heroes. One into the ten, one into the 20, two more into the 40.

George Michael is no longer facing a lawsuit from the cop who arrested him in LA two years ago. The LA cop accused Michael of defamation of character after the singer based his Outside single and video on his experience. The $20 million lawsuit was laughed out of court Wednesday. The presiding judge, in telling the cop to bog off, suggested that he get a grip. If he's really this thin-skinned he's in the wrong job and shouldn't be such a flake in future.

Supermarkets in Britain are slowly bringing down the cost of chart CDs. While they routinely cost �14.99 just 18 months ago, most retailers now sell a single CD for �12.99 or less. This week, Tresco said they were chopping ten leading discs to just �8.99. At this price, it finally becomes more expensive for UK residents to import their records from the US than pop to their nearest supermarket. It's still cheaper to import them from Canada, but only by a small amount.

Victoria Aadams made her debut on the London catwalk last Wednesday, and failed to fall over. Is there no beginning to this woman's talent?

"Rock", a new Super Nightclub (as the owners call it) opened in London this week. They promised a huge array of sparkling celebrities at the new venue. All they got was Little Billie Piper, flavour of the month in July 1998; and a 30 minute cameo appearance by Robbie Williams, flavour of the year 1999. Robbie made his excuses and left, though, saying he had to listen to Gary Barlow's most recent album for lyrical inspiration.

Santana's Supernatural reclaims the top spot on the US album list this week. It passes D'Angelo's Voodoo, which drops from #1 to #4. It is Santana's seventh non-consecutive week atop the chart. Up one to #2 is Dr Dre 2001, while Celine Dion's All The Way ... A Decade Of Song also climbs one to #3. Christina Aguilera's eponymous debut and Eiffel 65's Europop hold at 5 and 6, respectively.

At #7, Ghostface Killah's Supreme Clientele is the chart's top debut. The Grammy Nominees 2000 compilation enters at #19, while Drama's Causin' Drama bows at #59.

Rounding out the top 10, Kid Rock's Devil Without A Cause is up two slots to #8, DMX's ... And Then There Was X slips from 7 to 9, and Sisqo's Unleash The Dragon climbs two to #10.

Other major moves this week include Andrea Bocelli's Sogno, from 98 to 75, and two albums from teenage soprano Charlotte Church. Voice Of An Angel leaps from 101 to 73, while her self-titled release moves from 108 to 90. Kenny Rogers' album She Rides Wild Horses is the fastest climber, rocketing from 162 to 109. Of the other British talent, the Tarzan soundtrack climbs 55-44; Sting's Brand New Day slips 5 to 78; and Bush's The Science Of Things goes 85-98.

On the Hot 100, Savage Garden's I Knew I Loved You returns to #1, bumping Mariah Carey's Thank God I Found You featuring Joe and 98 Degrees after just one week. Hurrah for the Aussies, cries a relieved nation. Two country artists enjoy massive jumps, as Lonestar's Amazed soars to #3 from #18, and Faith Hill's Breathe rockets to #5 from #21. Santana's Maria Maria continues to climb - two spots to #6 means it's finally overtaken Smooth, which slips from 5 to 9. Britney Spears' From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart is the fastest climber, moving from 52 to 14. ObBrit: Sonique's It Feels So Good moves up another two to 17.

The MuchMusic Countdown still sees Aguilera hold the Backstreet Boys off the top. The Matthew Good Band's Load Me Up replaces Eiffel 65 in the top 3. A big climb for Our Lady Peace's Is Anybody Home? 8-5. Souldecision's Faded and McMaster & James' Love Wins Everytime remain locked, both climbing four to 9 and 10. Filter's Take A Picture the fastest climber, 23-17. New entries for Korn (Make Me Bad, 26) D'Angelo (Untitled, 28) and Dr Dre (Forget About Dre, 30). British representation from S Club 7 (Bring It All Back, 9-7) and the All Saints (Pure Shores, 22-22.)

Faith Hill's Breathe and Bryan Adams' Best Of Me climb into the top 10. Joint fastest climbers are Shania's Come On Over, the title track and 75,000th single lifted from the album (22-17) and Enrique Iglesias' Be With You (25-20). Four new entries: Madge's remake of American Pie is 23, Enigma's Gravity Of Love 24, SoulDecision's Faded 27 and Chantal Krevizauk's Dear Life 29.

Weekend 8: February 24-27

Some new releases? I think so. With most of the schools in the country taking a week's break, it's perfect timing for singles appealing to the 10 year old. This explains appearances from boy bands Backstreet Boys Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely and A1 Like a Rose. Both are soft ballads, both aren't hugely wonderful records. Backstreets headed top 3, A1 will be lucky to make 10. The Honeys She Won't Take It Lying Down is also aimed at the pocket money market, though is more radical R&B than their previous work. Top 20.

Fashionable acts are led by the Smashing Pumpkins, Bluetones and Gorky's Zygotic Mynki. The Blues should go top 20, the rest may struggle.

Radio has been behind Kelis' Caught Out There (top 10) and Jemelia's Money (top 30, but deserves better.) There's new Artful Dodger - Moving Too Fast looks set for a top 5 entry. Religious rockers Delerious? finally release a single while I'm in the UK, and should get their usual top 15 entry from it.

With the failure of their single to do decent business, the Oasis Publicity Machine cranked into overdrive as the launch party was a complete flop. No-one of any note was there as even the band couldn't be bothered to turn up. One of the brothers attacked Robbie Williams for no reason other than he's become more famous and popular than the group; Robbie replied by sending a wreath lamenting the death of the band's career.

Carlos Santana capped a triumphant comeback with a record-tying 8 Grammy awards. Supernatural won album of the year, Smooth song and record of the year. Santana tied Michael Jackson's 1983 record of most Grammys on a single night. The Supernatural project - which teamed Santana with an array of collaborators - also won trophies for pop duo/group vocal (Maria Maria); pop collaboration with vocals (Smooth, featuring Rob Thomas); pop instrumental performance (El Farol); rock duo/group with vocal (Put Your Lights On, featuring Everlast) and rock instrumental performance (The Calling, featuring Eric Clapton).

Another nominee whose career began in the 1960s, Cher, won her first Grammy for dance recording. She enjoyed her biggest commercial success last year with the hit single Believe.

Christina Aguilera beat out hot favourite Macy Gray for the Grammy as best new artist. TLC picked up two Grammys - for best R&B group performance for No Scrubs, and best R&B album for Fanmail. Sting bested Rickoi Martin and Marc Anthony in the male pop vocal category with Brand New Day. Country's leading ladies, the Dixie Chicks and Shania Twain, won two Grammys apiece. "We all feel really lucky," Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines said. "The second album and to have both of them acknowledged by the Grammys is unbelievable."

Other winners included original heavy metal merchants Black Sabbath, finally winning their first Grammy, and Phil Collins, winning his eighth for his Tarzan soundtrack album. Producer William Orbit shared an award with Madonna for their collaboration on Beautiful Stranger from the Austin Powers soundtrack, voted best film song. Crooner Tony Bennett, 73, and blues legend BB King, 74, both collected their ninth Grammys.

Shania Twain scooped Country Song (Come On Over) and Female Country Vocal Performance (Man! I Feel Like a Woman!) Diana Krall won for best jazz vocal performance for the title track from her best-album-nominee, When I Look In Your Eyes. Sarah McLachlan was acknowledged for best female pop vocal performance for I Will Remember You, beating off Aggie, Britney and Madge. Todd McFarlane, the Spawn comic book creator, won as co-director of the best short form music video - Korn's Freak On A Leash. Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton's cover of Neil Young's After The Gold Rush, from their Trio II album, won best country collaboration with vocals.

A surprise double winner was veteran luuurve god Barry White for best male R&B vocal performance and best traditional R&B vocal performance for Staying Power. Other winners included The Roots with Erykah Badu (Rap, Duo or Group; You Got Me) Whitney (Female R&B; It's Not Right But It's OK) Metallica (Hard Rock, Whisky In The Jar) Beck (Alternative, Mutations) the Red Hot Chili Peppers (Rock Song, Scar Tissue)

Spears, Martin and Gray went home empty-handed, but with plenty of alcohol.

Britney Spears hopes her upcoming album, "Good Grief! That Must Be Fake!" will intrigue an older audience. The album, due May 15, will include a cover of the Rolling Stones song, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. Spears, who claims to be a big fan of the classic track, said it was her idea to rework the song, and that she will start working on the track with hip-hop producer Rodney Jerkins in the near future.

The Spice Girls face the prospect of a �1 million bill. A High Court judge ruled in favour of a claim by Aprilia that the girls had been guilty of "unintentional misrepresentation" by failing to reveal Geri's plans to leave. Spice Girls Ltd must pay damages, costs and interest. Lawyers believe that the pop stars are likely to face a �1 million bill, including their own legal costs.

Company solicitor Gregor Kleinknecht said: "The whole thing has backfired on them - they only have themselves to blame." A company statement popped up reflecting its "pleasure" that the case had been settled successfully and it would be able to "make a substantial recovery on its losses in the action, even though it is regrettable that the matter had to come before the court to achieve a satisfactory resolution... Aprilia does not have any illfeelings towards the members of the Spice Girls or Geri Halliwell and wish them all the best for their future careers."

Santana rules again this week, as Supernatural retains the #1 spot in the US. It's the eighth non-consecutive week at the top. Dr Dre 2001 remains at #2, while Celine Dion's All The Way ... A Decade Of Song holds at #3. Last week's #6, Eiffel 65's Europop swaps with last week's #4, D'Angelo's Voodoo. Christina Aguilera's self-titled RCA debut remains at #5.
The Cure's Bloodflowers is the top debut at #16. Other significant entries include Trick Daddy's Book Of Thugs: Chapter A.K., Verse 47 at #26, Tracy Chapman's Telling Stories at #33, Amel Larrieux's Infinite Possibilities at #79, and the Who's BBC Sessions at #101.

The US has a new Number One single for the third straight week. Lonestar's Amazed rockets to #1, knocking Savage Garden's I Knew I Loved You to #2. It's the first Hot 100 topper from a country act since Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton reached the top with Islands In The Stream in 1983; Lonestar led the country chart for seven weeks from July to September last year. Another former country number one, Faith Hill's Breathe, jumps two notches to #3, while Mariah Carey's Thank God I Found You featuring Joe and 98 Degrees falls two spots to #4. Santana's Maria Maria featuring The Product G&B is on the move again, up one rung to #5. N 'Sync's Bye Bye Bye has the biggest airplay increase, leaping from #13 to #7. Pink's There You Go is the highest new entry, bowing at #25.

The Backstreet Boys top the MuchMusic Countdown, with Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely climbing the last place to the top. The Matthew Good Band's Load Me Up and Our Lady Peace's Is Anybody Home? round out the top 3. S Club 7's Bring It All Back climbs to 5, with Jennifer Lopez's Feeling So Good making its top 10 bow at 10. Blink 182's All the Small Things has the fastest climb, from 21-15; the Smashing Pumpkins climb 25-21. The only entry is Madonna's American Pie at 29. The All Saints are 24.

Santana's Maria Maria hits the top of the MuchMoreMusic Countdown, ahead of Tina Turner's When the Heartache is Over and the Marley-Hill collaberation that led last week. Faith Hill's Breathe soars 9-5, and McMaster & James' Love Wins Everytime enters the top 10 at 10. There are sizable climbs for Third Eye Blind (Never Let you Go, 16-12) Shania Twain (Come on Over, 17-14) Enrique Iglesias (Be With You 20-15) and Madonna (American Pie 23-19). Two entries: Sonique's It Feels So Good at 26 and the return of Jann Arden with Sleepless 29. Other Brits: Coors Radio 7-6; Sting Desert Rose 8-7; George Michael Roxanne 5-9.
