The MSCList

What it is and other questions

At the end of August 1994, American network ABC premiered a new show, My So-Called Life. Many other pages describe this programme; it suffices to say that it introduced Claire Danes to an unsuspecting world, was cancelled after a massive campaign, and now survives only on video and by its notional mailing list.

I say "notional", because the list seems to talk about anything but its title matter. As the archive of my posts shows, topics range from new movies to sport, world politics, and the muppets.

While the acquis communitaire is occasionally strained, the MSCList (My So-Called Life List) remains a warm, friendly place to spend a few minutes of your day.

Subscription instructions

To subscribe, send a mail to [email protected]. Your request will be processed by one of the co-admins; Sara the Wacko Guru; Shana Sunshine; and Eric No Nickname. You'll receive a mail back within a few hours, containing directions for swapping to the digest list.

It's an active list; there are usually around 100 posts over a 24 hour period. The digest version of the list typically sends out seven 35K digests per day.

This address was new as of April 26, 1998, and there may be some slight changes over the coming months.

List etiquette

MSCList aims to be a secure place to be. Posters are expected to follow normal netiquette: don't post advertisments, offensive or illegal material. Off-topic posts are welcomed within reason - I don't recommend newbies start a new topic with their first post.

Short posts agreeing with the contents of a previous post are strongly discouraged; offenders may receive a visit from the "ME TOO!!!!!" Taskforce. If you're forwarding something from another source, please delete all the accumulated mail headers from it.

Certain subscribers refer to the list as "Liberty", following the name of the school in My So-Called Life. While not a universally shared equation, "Liberty" is usually used as a shorthand form of "The My So-Called Life List".

Topics that tend to hit raw nerves are: whether Angela should have ended up with Jordan or Brian; the ownership of IRC logs and private emails; and anyone wearing a green jacket when posting. We can tell (:
