Veteran's Day Remembrance

Veteran's Day Craft idea
Materials - Picture of a flag, red star activity page (this is just a red pagewith a huge star on it), white and blue paint in separate tins, cotton balls, scissors, and yarn for hanging star.

1) Explain to the children that the United States is a very special place tolive because we have many opportunities and choices that are not alwaysavailable to people who live in other countries. Our freedom in America is protected by men and women. These men and women sometimes have to fight tokeep our freedom.

We honor the brave men and women who have fought to protect our Americanfreedom in November each year. This special day is called Veteran's Day.

2) Tell the children the American colors are red, white, and blue. Our flag is red, white and blue and it is a reminder to us of the freedoms we have here. (Show the picture of the flag - Count the Stars and Stripes.) Tell the
children that the 50 stars represent the fifty states in our country.

3) Explain to the children as a reminder of our veterans and to honor these dedicated men and women, they will make a Veteran's Star and decorate it with white and blue paint.

4) Give each child their red star activity page. Ask them to turn the activity page over so that the star is not seen. Allow the children to dip a cotton ball into the white or blue paint, then paint or dab the color onto the back of the paper. Encourage them to use both colors on the red paper. When the children are finished painting their stars, set them aside to dry.

5) When the stars are dry (the next day or that afternoon), give each child their star to cut out. Encourage them to cut carefully on the lines. Your younger toddlers will need assistance with the scissoring. When scissoring is
completed, hang the Veteran's Stars from the ceiling with thread or yarn.

6) When the activity has been completed, have the children sit down and listen to the following poem, "The Flag". (Show the children the flag as you read to them.)

The Flag
Our Country's flag is beautiful.
It's red and white and blue.
Our flag belongs to all of us
And not to just a few.

Oh, look at our flag,
How it stands tall and bright,
How it moves in the wind,
How it shines like a light.

The colors are bright
And the stars seem to shine.
It's the flag of our Country.
It's your flag and mine.

Read this poem over several times so that the children become familiar with it.

Teach the children the Pledge of Allegiance

Look for red, white, and blue
pictures in magazines to make a collage.

Sing, "Your a Grand Old Flag"

Snack idea: As part of the Veteran's Day activity, create a red, white, and blue desert or snack. Layer blue and red jello together and top with whipped cream!!
