House of Hugs "Pumpkins & Halloween" Theme

PUMPKINS

Pumpkin Coloring Activity sheet.

Pumpkin Exploration (messy messy fun!!!!!)

1. Have a large Pumpkin put in a large bowl or pan. Cut off the top, and enough area to allow arms and hands to reach in. Have the child reach in and feel all the different textures, let them pull out the seeds and feel the pulp. Discuss the different senses that they are experiencing.

2. Wash hands and go to a table.

3. Give the child a large piece of paper with a pumpkin drawn on one side. Have them draw in the things that they saw, and have them color the pumpkin.

4. On the other side of the paper draw lines across. Have the child describe what they sensed. "It was squishy.", "The seeds were hard.", "It smelled funny", and so on.... (If the child has trouble describing, you can help by asking questions such as: "How did it smell?", "What did the inside feel like?", "What were the seeds like?"

What's Inside A Pumpkin? Cut out a brown pumpkin stem, a green leaf, and two identical orange pumpkins. Label the first pumpkin, "what's inside a pumpkin?". Have the child glue small pieces of yellow/orange yarn, and pumpkin seeds to the other pumpkin. Assemble the pumpkin and place a brad at the top to hold it all together. Now they can flip and see..."What's Inside a Pumpkin?"

Lunch bag Pumpkins

Use a regular brown paper lunch bag to make this craft. Color the bottom half of the bag orange. Take a green string and gather up the top and tie the bag shut. Paint the top of the bag green. Add Jack o lantern face to orange part..

Thumbprint Pumpkins

Give each child a sheet of white or yellow construction paper. pour small amountsof orange paint into shallow containers. Have the kids dip their thumb into the paints and press them all over the paper. When the paint has dried, help the children turn their thumbprints into pumpkins by adding stems, leaves and vines with a green marker!

Milk jug Pumpkin Craft-pour a small amout of orange paint into the milk jug. Replace the cap securely! Let the kids shake the jug until the entire inside is covered with the orange paint. Pour out any extra paint. Paint the cap green. Cut out the mouth nose and eyes from construction paper and glue into place. Take some curling ribbon, curl it and place it over the opening of the jug and then screw the lid back on to fasten the ribbon in place. This will act as a vine for the Pumpkin.
If you have older kids let them do several and fill them with sand and use them as a decotartion outside you house (provided you have them paint on the face, as the construction paper would not hold up outside)

HALLOWEEN PARTY GAMES

Cool HomemadeHalloween Make-up Recipe!
Why not try your hand at mixing up a batch of this cool Halloween make-up as a safe alternative to a mask!
What you need: Cornstarch Flour Karo light corn syrup Liquid or paste food colors (paste makes more intense colors) Facial tissues Cotton balls or batting and Puffed Wheat cereal for special effects 1 Sm. mixing bowl 4 paper cups Cotton swabs or sm. brush What to do: In bowl, mix 3 tablespoons cornstarch and 1 tablespoon flour.
Gradually stir in 3/4 cup Karo corn syrup and 1/4 cup water until smooth. This amount will make up 4 faces. Divide mixture between 4 paper cups. Color 3 batches with food colors of your choice (1/2 teaspoon liquid or 1/4 teaspoon paste for each batch). Leave 1 batch untinted.
For additional colors, prepare more makeup. Separate tissues into single layers; tear lengthwise into 2-inch wide strips. Using swabs or brush, paint generous coat of untinted mixture on forehead; place strip of tissue over area; pat firmly with fingertips. Brush on more of same mixture to cover any dry spots on tissue. Continue painting rest of face, one area at a time, and covering it with tissue. Dont paint eyelids or around eyes. Let dry about 15 minutes; time depends on temperature and humidity.
Stir colored batches before using. Paint on 1 color at a time as desired. Let dry slightly before using another color if you want them to blend, or let dry completely if you dont. To speed process, use hair dryer on air setting.
For deeper, smoother, candy-color effect, use several coats of same color (allow to dry slightly between coats).
TO BUILD UP EYEBROWS, nose or chin (or for beard) apply cotton to damp, untinted mixture. Paint with more of the same. Cover with tissue and paint desired color.
FOR GHOULISH EFFECT, dust made-up face with flour.
FOR WARTS, stick on Puffed Wheat cereal with untinted mixture, then coat with layers of mixture-soaked tissue. Paint desired color.
TO REMOVE MAKEUP, wet face, then gently peel tissue away. Wash face with warm water.

Pumpkin Pond: Fill up a small kiddy pool with water & adding plastic pumpkins that have small prizes inside.
Pumpkin Hoop Toss: Simply a hoola hoop thrown over a large pumpkin
Pin the Tail on the Cat: Make a black cat out of felt & find some great cat eyes at the craft store. Cut a tail out of some fake fur, added rough velcro on back, & make a blindfold out of leftover felt and elastic.
Apple Bobbing Noodle Grab: Fill a pot with water & add cooked spaghetti. Add small toys. The spaghetti will float on top & toys will sink to bottom. To get to the toys, kids have to reach into the GROSS mixture! To make it more gross, add green food coloring!
Sack Decorating: Since the kids will be collecting prizes, get some small paper sacks with handles. Fill the table with markers, glitter and lots of halloween stickers & let them decorate their own sacks!
Pumkin Roll Race: Let kids have race with medium sized pumpkins.
Halloween Clothes Grab Bag Gather up all kinds of clothing articles (i.e. hats, baggy shirts and pants, ties, dresses, shoes, etc) and stuff it in a duffle bag or large pillow case. Pass the bag around. Each person must take out one article without looking. Play some music and have everyone walk down modeling their item!
Halloween Toe Mural (All Ages) Get a large piece of butcher paper (white) for a mural. Instead of finger painting - do "toe" painting with a Halloween theme. Kids must dip their toes and/or feet into pie pans of different color water paints. This should be hilarious. You could even divide up the kids into several groups to have several different murals. Award prizes for creativity, funny, scarry, etc.
Pumpkin Toss Similar to egg tossing. Use a small pumpkin per two players. The two people toss the pumpkin back and forth to each other, each time stepping back away from each other. The person wins who does not drop the pumpkin.
