Notes for ELIJAH PUGH:

Elijah moved from NC to GA in 1773. He fought in the Revolutionary War and received 287 1/2 acres in GA in the Revolutionary War Bounty Land Grants. He settled in Clarke County, Alabama in 1812. He served as Justice of the Quorum in the courts of Clarke County. In Territorial Papers of the United States, Vol 18, compiled by Clarence Edwin Carter, regarding Alabama Territory, is found a letter Elijah Pugh wrote Govenor Bibb from Clarke County, Alabama Territory, on June 15, 1818 resigning his office due to "a variety of considerations", and recommending Lewis Saunders be appointed to this office. The Justice of the Quorum were to preside over the court in absence of the Judge.

Elijah and wife, Ruth, are buried in the Pugh Family Cemetery. Their grave stones read: "Elijah Pugh 1760-1824, Emigrated from North Carolina to Georgia 1773, From Georgia to Alabama 1812. A Soldier of the Revolution." "Ruth Julian Pugh, 1763-1848." The D. A. R. has placed a marker on the grave of Elijah Pugh.

In Bounty Surveys, Le Conte Lists, Elijah Pugh 287 1/2 acres of land in Washington County, Georgia, warrant 2167, May 17, 1787, Land given for services in the Revolution; Smith's History of Georgia, pg. 621, states that "Jesse and Elijah Pugh were soldiers in Georgia".

All of Jesse and Rebecca's children were of age and living in Randolph County in 1867 except Matthew. His whereabouts were unknown.

At the time of his death, Jesse owned 3 tracts of land that apparently adjoined. They were 50 acres, 120 acres, and 50 acres. The land was on Mt. Pleasant Creek and adjoined land owned by Franklin Burgess, Pleasant Frazier and others.

A petition for partition of the land was filed by Alfred Pugh, L.C. York and wife B. L. (Lucinda) York, O.P. York and wife, Lovina against Manly Pugh, T. F. Pugh, Frank & Elmira Richardson, Branson & Susannah York, Malinda Wilson, and Matthew Pugh. Since Matthew's whereabouts were unknown, he was represented by David McMasters, his regular authorized agent and attorney. George P. Reid was the attorney for the petitioners. (No date given)
