James married out of unity, and he and Jemima continued to reside in Uwchlan. James' will was proved Oct. 21, 1769, his wife's will was proved Dec. 3, 1772, naming one son and five daughters. Will Book 5, pg. 159 & 366.

Notes for DAVID PUGH:

David was a Private in the Revolutionary War. He was a Saddler for Captain Solomon Wood in Colonel Malmedy's Regiment. (He made saddles) He served for 84 months and received 640 acres of land in the Revolutionary War Bounty Land Grant, which went to his heirs.

3. HUGH2 PUGH (JAMES M.1)3 was born November 01, 1699 in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and died 1749 in Pennsylvania. He married MARY JONES October 06, 1733 in Uwchlan MM, Chester County, Pennsylvania, daughter of CADWALLADER JONES and ELEANOR EVANS.

Notes for HUGH PUGH:

Will of Hugh Pugh was dated Oct. 26, 1748 and proved Jan. 6, 1748/9 and was recorded in the West Chester Will Book 3, pg. 98. His wife evidently predeceased him, and his father's home plantation to have passed into other hands for he provides his eldest son, Enos, to be put with cousin, John Pugh, of Radnor until age 16. His eldest daughter, Dinah married Simon Meredith in 1755; son Hugh "having but one hand to be schooled". Hugh later became a school master in Radnor; youngest daughter, Rebecca, to be put with Margaret Lewis, wife of Nathan Lewis of Newbern. She later married David Hilles and went to Redstone.

Hugh received his father's home plantation in Chester County, PA by his father's will.

4. JOHN2 PUGH (JAMES M.1)5 was born November 02, 1701 in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and died April 24, 1760. He married MARY JENKINS August 07, 1730 in Uwchlan Meeting House, Chester County, PA, daughter of EVAN JENKINS.

John Pugh died intestate. By petition of partition in 1761, his land was divided between his sons John, Jr. and Jonathan.

Notes for JOHN PUGH JR.:

John, Jr. made his will in May, 1795 and died later that year. John provided nicely for his wife, Hannah, with the balance of his estate going to his nephew, Jesse Roberts. Jesse inherited the Tanning and Farming interests, along with the mansion house, with the condition that Hannah could continue to live there until her death.

John, Jr. and Hannah had no children.

5. THOMAS2 PUGH, SR. (JAMES M.1)5 was born 1703 in West Chester, Chester Co., Pennsylvania, and died November 30, 1794 in Randolph County, North Carolina. He married ELIZABETH RICHARDSON about 1729 in Chester County, PA.

Thomas was paying taxes in Nantmeal and Uwchlan from 1730 to 1747. He and his family moved to North Carolina shortly after 1747 and was received by certificate at Cane Creek Meeting in 1756.

Thomas & Elizabeth were cousins. They were the first PUGH's to come to NC, about 1750, which is when the North Carolina territory was first opened for settlement, and settled on Sandy Creek in Randolph County. Thomas was received into the Cane Creek Friends Meeting in 1756.

Thomas was involved in the NC Regulators from 1768 - 1771. He was disowned by the Cane Creek Friends Meeting for taking part in the Battle of Alamance.
