VINCENT RONGNION RUNGINE RUNYON

Vincent Runyon was a French Huguenot who sought refuge in this country from reliqious persecution he settled in New Jersey. His descendants went early circa 1770 to Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky , New York, Canada and West Virginia. Many accounts of Vincent and his descendants are scattered throughout genealogical literature; ORRA EUGENE MONNET, "First Settlers of Piscataway, New Jersey", gives much information about Huguenots in general, but speciffically about those that came early into New Jersey. His narration of Vincent is quoated .

"Vincent Rongnion (spelling as on his marraige record) Hugyenot, most strikingly illustrates the French Protestant oringins, the religious schism in France, and the expatriation sacrifices, and the struggle for human freedom in a new environment, with a meritorious distinction, which gave vital effect to and influence upon the new civilization in a new world. He was the sole head of a new race , whose progeny with every French attribute, intermarried and diffused itself through thousands of early New Jersey people.

He oringinated in or near the City of Poitiers, in the Province of Ancienne Poitus, France. He came in 1668 to the Isle of Jersey, He first settled in Elizabeth Town where he was a Carpenter; He married Anne Boutcher, alleged English woman. Coming from Herts, England who in reality was Anne Bouchierre, oringinally French."

The first mention of Vincent this side of the waters is his marraige license given by Phillip (sic) Carteret, the young Governor of New Jersey in 1668. The document is on file in the office of the Scretary of State of New Jersey at Trenton, and reads as follows:

To any of the Justices of the Peace or Ministers of the Province of New Jersey:

Whereas I have received information of a mutual agreement between Vincent Rongnion of Portiers, in France, and Ann Boutcher, daughter of John Boutcher , of Hartford in England, to solemize marraige togeather, for which they have requested my license, and there appearing to be no lawful impediment for the obstruction thereof, these are to require you or eyther of you, to joyne the said Vincebt Rongnion and Ann Boutcher in matrimony, and then to pronounce them Man and Wife , and to make record thereof, according to the laws in that behalf provided, for the doing whereof this shall be to you or eyther of you sufficient warrant.

Given under my hand and seal of the Province this 28th. Day of June 1668, and the 20th. Year of the raigne of our Sovereign Lord Charles the Second of England, Scotland, Ireland, King defender of the faith, &c.

Signed Ph.Carteret.

This couple were joyned in matrimony by me the 17th. Of July, 1668.

The Runyon House is the original house owned by Benjamin Runyon. It was restored & moved to a historical park called East Jersey Olde Towne in New Jersey. According to the park's brochure:

" The Runyon House represents the wealth and changing needs of Piscataway's settling families. A typical 18th century Middlesex County home of an established family, it originally stood at 175 Possumtown

Road. It is said, the House was used to conceal slaves fleeing via the underground Railroad. The House also reportedly served as a wayside inn... ...One of Vincent's nine children, Peter, settled the land on which the Runyon House was built. New roads were being built to the lands above the River, and in 1680, Peter became a landowner around Ambrose and Rehoboth Brooks. Like his father, Peter acquired additional land and was a wealthy man when he died in 1755. Upon Peter's death, Benjamin, a younger son, received a sizable tract of land. This is where he built the Runyon House (dates vary from 1755-1780). When Benjamin died in 1785, the house and land passed to his wife, Mercy, breaking a tradition of leaving property to the first born son.The remainder of Peter's holdings were sold off according to his will. After his wife's death in 1852, Peter's son, Daniel, inherited the homestead. In 1852, Daniel sold the Runyon House and all surrounding property to aneighbor, Nelson Boice, ending almost 100 years of Runyon occupation.the House and property remained in the Boice family until 1912, passing through several owners, until being purchased by Beecham, Inc. The House was donated and moved in the spring of 1978."

Generation 1

VINCENT RONGNION RUNGINE1 1RUNYON was born Abt. 1645 in PORTIERS, ANCIENNE POITIU, FRANCE, and died November 11, 1713 in PISCATAWAY, MIDDLESEX CO., NEW JERSEY. He married ANN MARTHA BOUTCHER July 17, 1668 in ELIZABETH TOWN, NEW JERSEY.

MARRAIGE LICENSE AD 1668 ON FILE IN TRENTON NEW JERSEY.

His probate record is to be found among the unrecorded wills, (WILLS, N. J., Vol. 3, p. 1429).

On March 25, 1671, Vincent Runyon, carpenter, of Elizabeth Town, purchased of Francis Barber, planter, of same place, a home lot, which Barber had previousl acquired of William Pyles and the latter of Thomas Moore. It adjoined the home lot of George Pack. Vol. 1 of Deeds, page 315; office of Secretary of State, Trenton). Subsequently this was sold and the family moved to the Baptist community at Piscataway, Middlesex County, where on the Raritan river the family homestead of 154.5 acres was acquired in the Spring of 1677. He is show as having served as a juryman in that county and was a witness in 1671-2. (Clayton, p. 24.) (Idem, p. 590: vide, PART ONE, BIB., p. 32, UNION). This is interesting as giving the then popular memorial relative to this Settlement.

The information you list below is for the succession of ownership of the original VINCENT RUNYON Plantation. VINCENT'S PLANTATION just happens to be adjacent to Johnson Park where East Jersey Olde Towne and the RUNYON HOUSE happens to be located. In fact, you can walk from East Jersey Olde Town to the property that VINCENT owned by walking the "fire lanes" and crossing a small creek. To my knowledge, none of VINCENT RUNYON'S dwellings have survived. As you indicate, the VINCENT SR.'s property was inherited by VINCENT, JRand then passed out of the family. According to the publication "Proceedings NJ Historical Society", the

owners were: Vincent Runyon (owned 1687-1706) > son Vincent & Mary Hull (1706-1723) Hendrick Smock (1739-1790) his daughter Ann & Gerrit Gerritson > James Gerritson (1855-1900).

Children of VINCENT RUNYON and ANN BOUTCHER are:
