Forty years a Juror

Few are the Pioneer citizens of Parke County now remaining. Last Saturday morning at about 11o'clock passed away a man long known to rockville, Justice Scott Noel. He was born near haroldsburg Kentucky May 20, 1808, being 80 years 8 months and 12 days old. When he was about 10 years old his parents moved to sulivan County this state, where they remained one year. From there they went to Monroe county and finally came to Parke county in the fall of 1823 where he has since resided except a short time when he lived at Fort Branch.

April 20, 1829 he married Peninah Morris with whom he lived unti8l her death in 1880. They had two children William m. and Elizabeth, both of whom have been dead many years. Of his eleven brothers and sisters five survive him as follows: Samuel, coleman and Sedrick Noel and Mrs. Patsy Puett and Mrs. Sally Burford, For about forty-five years Scott Noel was a member of the M. E,. Church and died trusting in his Savior.

The most remarkable feature in his long life was the unusual length of time he performed the offices of a Justice of the Peace. His brother Matthew was about, if not the first, justice in the county. At the April election in 1848 Scott was elected to the offie, his opponent being A. Hart, who received one vote against 275 for Noel . This shows great popularity or an over whelming majority of his party. Almost continuously since then he has held the office. Two years he was mail agen from Rockville to Evansville. For many years Mr. Noel ws a dry goods merchabnt, and in fact like the pioneers in general in early life he tried many ways of making a living. For instance he knew how to lay brick and worked on the old brick courthouse.

Many interesting stories of his early life could doubtless be detailed, for he was a strong man and took full part in all interesting occurances of early Rockville days. Squire Noel stood six feet four inches in his stocking feet and was remarkably erect to the last. Whatever may be said of him this must be admitted, that he never betrayed public confidence.

His last illness was short but full of suffering. Taken with a chill the Sunday before he died he was badly ill from the first. The funeral took place from the residence of his sister Mrs. Burford Sunday afternoon and was largely attended. Revs. Cummings and Campbell conducted the services. Full of years he was laid to rest among the fathrs.
