Top paragraph on page 18:

His wife, Marretje Simons, joined Old Dutch Church in Kingston, N.Y. June 24, 1661, and Jacob Barentsen KOOL joined it Oct. 15 1665. In that their oldest child, (Symen) Simon, was bp. there 3-27-1661, they must (or Marretje must have) have been members of some church before she came to Kingston. POWER of ATTORNEY

(2-19-1659)

"Power of Attorney from Evert Pels to Jan Jacobsen*

Appeared before me, Johannes La Montagne, in the service of the General Chartered West India Company Commissary at Fort Orange, and the village of Beverwyck, Evert Pels, who de- clared in the presence of the herinafter named witnesses, that he hath constituted and appointed, as hereby does con- stitute and appoint, the Honorable Captain Jan Jacobsen his attorney, in the principle's [sic George Jansen Jr.] name and in his behalf, to procure the freedom of MARRETJE SYMONS, sister of the Principle's [sic again GJ] wife, dwelling in the city of New Amstel, on the South River**, with one Pieter Pietersen Harder, in such manner as the attorney may adjudge best; promising to hold good and valid whatever the attorney shall do in this matter, as if he, the principle, were himself present, for which he binds his person and estate, real and personal, submitting the same to all courts and judges.

Done in Fort Orange the 19th of February, anno 1659, in the presence of Johannes Prevost and Jan Pietersen Muller.

Signed EVERT PELS; Witnesses : Johannes Provoost and Jan Pieters; acknowledged before me La Montagne, Com-missary at Ft. Orange. "

Note: The above would indicate that Marretje Symons must have bonded herself to some friend of the family, in order to pay for her passage to this country by working it out Evert Pels had married Jannetje Symons in Europe, they came to this country on the ship "Den Houtteyn", in 1642. Jannetje and Marretje were sisters, so Marretje must have come some years later, as it would not take 19 or 20 years' work to pay for a passage, even then. Legend indicates that it took three years' work to pay for a passage to America.END of page 19
