Who was JOSEPH MICHAUD ?





  Like his two older brothers, Joseph was born on December 1st, 1678 at Ile-aux-Grues.  He was baptized on February 27, 1679 by the visiting missionary. Paul Dupuys, "seigneur" of Ile-aux-Oies, was his godfather and his godmother was Élisabeth Langlois, daughter of Noël Langlois, one of the first settlers in New France, arriving he, born in 1709, and her mother cannot be found.re in 1634.  Élisabeth married Guillaume Lemieux.

  Joseph was 14 years old when his family went to live in Kamouraska.  When his brothers left home, he became his father's right arm.  In 1702, he went to notary Étienne Jacob to sign a prenuptial contract and was married on May 28 in Ste. Famille church of Ile d'Orléans, to Catherine Dionne, daughter of Antoine Dionne and Catherine Ivory. Joseph and Catherine had three children born between 1704 and 1709, Antoine, Jérôme and Marie, baptized in Rivière-Ouelle where the parish priest kept a registry.  Unfortunately, the documents from 1709 to 1727 have been destroyed and the death certificates for little Marie, born in 1709, and her mother cannot be found.

  Young widower, Joseph, father of two young boys, took a second wife.  On January 10, 1717 he went to meet with parish priest Auclair to execute a contract under private signature to marry Marguerite Ouellet, daughter of Mathurin-René Ouellet and Angélique Lebel.  Joseph and Marguerite had six daughters and a son.  The year 1735 brought much sadness to this family.  Marguerite dies on March 10 and Joseph on July 14, on his way back from mass, four months after his wife.  On January 26, 1715, Joseph had bought the homestead of Pierre Albert and Louise-Thérèse Grondin which was located west of his mother's farm.  Marie Ancelin, now aged and a widow since 1702, "gave herself" to her son, Joseph, who looked after her until her death in 1729.

  Who were Joseph heirs ? Of his first marriage, Antoine who, in 1729, married Madeleine Cordeau-Délorier.  They had ten children, including a set of twins who died at birth.  Jérôme was drowned in 1730, at age 22, trying to swim across Boyer river.  He was buries in St. Vallier.  Second marriage : daughter Marie-Joseph married Jacques de la Bourlière in 1740.  She died in 1743 at the birth of her third child.  She was 23.  In 1742, Marie-Anne married Augustin-Amador de la Bourlière, brother to Jacques.  They had five children.  Judith born in 1728 died in 1730.  Louise, born in 1730, was married to Jean-Baptiste Dumont in 1765.  They had five children, two sons died at birth.  Joseph-Alexandre, born in 1732, married Véronique Nadeau in 1758.  They had three children, one son, Joseph, who died a bachelor at age 84 in St-André-de-Kamouraska. Claire was married in 1765 to Gabriel-Ange Phocas.  They both died in 1769 leaving their only son, Gabriel, an eight month old baby, an orphan.  Joseph's youngest daughter, Geneviève, born on March 9, 1735 soon became an orphan.  Her mother, Marguerite died the day following her birth.  Geneviève married Louis Nadeau in 1759.  They had seven children.
