Amy's Favorite Online Bookstores
I absolutely love to read! I find that shopping online for books is a wonderful way to buy books when you know exactly what you want, to locate a hard to find book, to Christmas shop for someone else, or even to just browse. I've included the really big online bookstores. I usually comparison shop for prices between these stores since I usually buy the easy to find books in these types of stores. I use the smaller stores to locate difficult to find books. (Ex. A third book to a series I started ages ago and is now out of print.) I've recently added some specialized search engines I've found that with search a number of online bookstores for out of print books, or for the purpose of comparison pricing. If you know of any good online bookstores that I haven't found yet, please send an email with your suggestions!

Big/Commercial Online Bookstores
Books.com --
This is the smallest of the bookstores I include in this category. I list it first because it's the first one I personally discovered. I find that the site is typically kind of slow to load. One thing unique about this site is that it has a program where you accumulate bonus points that can then be used as credit towards free books.
Amazon.com --
This is a huge bookstore with 2.5 million titles. They tend to have excellent prices as well and often will have books that Books.com does not.
Borders.com --
Another giant bookstore with "10 million books, CDs, and videos". Great prices and selection.
BarnesandNoble.com --
This is another huge online bookstore. It's a place I look for common books and new releases. It's another in the list of stores I use to comparison shop.

WordsWorth --
Yet another of the big online bookstores. Over 2 million titles.
Spree Books --
And another big online bookstore. Check them all out and choose your personal favorite. I'm just providing you with the list.
The Bookstore --
Here's another one. I'm beginning to feel guilty that I can't come up with witty original things to say about each store. If you pick one as your favorite, send an email and tell me why. I'd be more than happy to include your reasons as the description on this page.

Small Online Bookstores
Powell's Bookstore --
Small is probably not a completely accurate description of this one. It has over 1 million titles. It has new books, used books, and rare books. This is my favorite store for locating books that are out of print. Keep in mind that the prices on their used books are great!
The Bent Cover --
This is the second place I go when looking for difficult to find books.
The Other Change of Hobbit --
I must admit that my weakness when it comes to leisure reading is for science fiction/fantasy books. This is the store I go to when I'm looking for a science fiction/fantasy book I can't find elsewhere.

Bookstore Search Engines/Price Comparison
Asces --
This is a nice search engine that will search about 25 online bookstores and compare prices for you. Their list of online bookstores includes most of the stores on this page. Here is their search form. Keep in mind that the price you see includes shipping for sending just one book though. If you want to order more than one book, comparative prices may work out differently. I find that the pricing information is not what I really use this service for. I like to use it to help me locate the stores a book is available from. Particularly if I'm looking for a hard to find book.

AddALL --
This is another search engine that compares prices at over 40 bookstores. They allow you to personalize shipping costs by state and search for books by title, author, ISBN, or keyword. They also help locate used books.
bibliofind --
bibliofind is designed to locate used and rare books, periodicals, etc.
BookFinder.com --
This site locates new, used, rare, and out of print books.
book-compare --
This site also locates new, used, rare, and out of print books. You can never have too many of these sorts of search engines. When you are looking for an out of print book, you want as many chances as possible to find it.
PriceSearch --
This site is more general. You can choose to search for books, software, movies and much more. The book search engine at this site is great and it allows you to sort the results by price, or by individual store.

Let me quickly mention two programs that I've discovered on the net that I really enjoy. The first is AllAdvantage, a program that allows you to earn money while you browse the web by running their advertising banner across the bottom of the monitor. You can also earn money for the time your friends spend browsing, and their friends, and their friends, etc. You won't make a living this way, but it can get you a little extra spending money. The second is My Points, a program in which you earn points in a variety of ways including answering surveys, visiting web sites, buying products, taking advantage of trial offers, etc. It is fairly easy to earn points and they actually have nice ways to spend them including gift certificates to bookstores, restaurants, clothing stores, calling cards, and frequent flier miles to name just a few.
