John Rice was born about 1791 in South Carolina, and died after 1866 in Covington Co. AL. He married Catherine Cook 30 January, 1818 in Mecklenburg Co. North Carolina.
One would wonder why would John go to North Carolina to marry when he lived in South Carolina. He could have been visiting relatives, but since Catherine was born in North Carolina she may have still lived in that State. Some family members state that Catherine was a full blooded Indian. However, there is no proof for this statement and may be speculation
John first appears in Covington Co. when he received a land patent in Section 34, Township 6, Range 16, NE 1/4 of SW1/4 in Covington Co. on 18 August, 1859
John is listed on the 1850, 1860 and 1866 Census in Covington Co.
The last census that John is listed on is 1866 when he is listed between the age of 70 to 80 years of age, the only other household member was his wife Catherine, who is listed between 60 & 70 years of age.

Jesse W. Rice was born 1819 in Marion Co. SC., and died 27 February, 1867 in Covington Co. AL. He married Emilla "Emily" maiden name unknown in AL.
Both Jesse W. and his brother John N. Rice were members of Rosehill, AL., Masonic Lodge # 253. Masonic Recorded J. W. Rice's death 27 February, 1867.
Jesse W. may have been in AL., before his father and reason for John to live in AL. Jesse had a land patent almost a year before that of his father John. Jesse had patent 1 November, 1858 for 80 acres in South 1/2 Southeast, Section 23, Township 6 North, Range 17 East Covington Co. AL.
All of his children were born in Alabama, so Jesse was in Alabama in the early 1840's
Jesse first appears in Pike Co. and is listed on the 1850 Census there. In 1860 he is listed in Covington Co. and in 1870 his widow is listed as head of household in Covington Co. with four of their children. Living next door is a son John Nelson Rice.
