Miles was a verteran of the War Between the States and fought for the Conferderate cause as a private with the 24th Virginia Calvary. His brothers also fought for the Confederacy; Leroy served with the 41st Virginia Infantry, Company I (he was wounded at the Battle of the Crater and died in 08/15/1864 at Chimborazo hospital #2) and Joseph served first with the 16th Virginia Infantry and then transferred to the 41st Virginia Infantry.

Sarah's maiden name is unknown but it may be Keeling since the Parker family had a tradition of giving the mother's maiden name as the children's middle names. The name Keeling appears later in the family.
