Very little is known about Margaret Porter's or William Kirby's parentage. According to family history, William was from Ireland and either spoke little English or spoke with a brogue so thick that his granddaughter could hardly understand him. He was described as a short, portly, dark-haired man who smoked a pipe and played the fiddle to entertain the children.
Margaret was born in this country and was supposed to be of Irish extraction.
The daughters married and remained in the area of Frostburg/Cumberland MD. Rose Katherine married George Washington Smith Sr. (b. 1869).
