Creative Lettering Tips
Creative Lettering Tips

"I don't like my handwriting", "I can't draw". "I'm not Creative".
Have you ever said any of those? Well if you have, you're one of the many who are in the same boat. Lots of us, don't particularly care for our handwriting, or we don't think we are creative enough to do all the creative lettering we see our peers doing. But guess what? You can! Here are a few tips to get you started.

  1. PEN ANGLE
Make sure the entire pen tip has full contact with the page. To do this, pull the pen forward into your fingers and hold the pen almost vertical.
  2. PEN CONTROL
Take every opportunity to pull your pen instead of pushing it. The key is to make your vertical lines straight and parallel. The rounded and curved lines should be very round and open.
  3. USE A PENCIL AND RULER
This is not considered cheating. First write your title out in pencil, go back over it with your lettering pen. Once the ink dries, erase the extra pencil marks. (Hint: If you are using a Clean Color Marker wait until the next day to erase to avoid smudging.)
  4. RELAX!
Roll those shoulders, take a deep breath, shake out your arms and remember, if you goof up, you can always try it again.
  5. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
A little bit of practice can go a long way. Use leftover scraps to practice a lettering technique. The more your practice the better you'll get.
  6. BEST BET PENS
A few of our favorite pens:
Zig Writer - 2 ended marker great for general lettering Zig Scroll and Brush - for fancy lettering and adding fun to your page.
Zig Calligraphy - not just for calligraphers anymore! Great for bold titles, and drawing little lines.
Zig Millenium - wonderful for "swoopies", detailing and journaling
Zig Opaque Writer - Try it in white for writing on dark papers.
