New Brunswick Historical Tidbits The Gubbins Tour
By Mitch Biggar
Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Gubbins was appointed to the post of Inspecting Filed Officer of Militia for New Brunswick. In 1811 Gubbins was ordered to organize and train New Brunswick's local Forces against a possible American attack. Gubbins lived at Chief Justice Ludlow's estate in Springhill and toured southern Nw Brunswick in 1811. His second tour in 1813 included the Miramichi Bay area. On his inspections Gubbins kept extensive journals, which still survive to this day.
In his journals Gubbins says that while most New Bruunswickers are of British descent few people displayed British habits.
