Claude and Paul went to higher grade school in Irvington (near Warm springs) and in 1891 they registered in the first class at Stanford University (Class of 1895). Their major: engineering. Both became very active in athletics. Both played football with Paul as captain of the first football team. Claude also made the baseball team. Paul and classmate, Herbert Hoover, (later, President of Stanford, and later still , President of the United States ) were close friends and during their lives, enjoyed many fishing trips together.
