welcome at our council fires.

our gifts, in the name of love..

does not lift a hand to prevent it,

is as guilty as the wrongdoers.

(NAVAJO)

First you are to always think of God.

Second you are to use all your powers

to care for your people, especially the poor.

(SIOUX)

The words of God are not like the oak leaf

which dies and falls to the earth,

but like the pine tree which stays green forever.

Don't walk behind me; I may not lead.

Don't walk in front of me; I may not follow.

Walk beside me that we may be as one.

(UTE)

we must act peace, live peace, and live in peace.

(SHENANDOAH)

Prayers

The Native American Prayer

by Yellow Hawk - Sioux Chief

Oh Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the winds,

and whose breath gives life to all the world - hear me -

I come before you, one of your children.

I am small and weak. I need your strength and wisdom.

Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes behold

the red and purple sunset. Make my hands respect

the things you have made, my ears sharp to your voice.

Make me wise, so that I may know the things you have

taught my people, the lesson you have hidden in every leaf and rock.

I seek strength not to be superior to my brothers, but to be able

to fight my greatest enemy, Myself. Make me ever ready

come to you, with clean hands and straight eyes, so when life

fades as a fading sunset, my spirit may come to you without shame.

Prayer for the White Man

And now, Grandfather, I ask you to bless the White Man.

He needs your wisdom, your guidance.

You see, for so long, he has tried to destroy my people,

and only feels comfortable when given power.

Bless them, show them the peace we understand,

teach them humility. For I feel they will someday

destroy themselves and their children, as they have done to

Mother Earth. I plead, I cry. After all, They are my Brothers...

There is no Death...Only a change of worlds..Only a change of worlds.

An Indian Prayer

by H. Kent Craig

My Grandfather is the fire. My Grandmother is the wind.

The Earth is my mother. The Great Spirit is my father

The World stopped at my birth and laid itself at my feet.

And I shall swallow the Earth whole when I die,

and the Earth and I will be one

Hail the Great Spirit, my father, without him no one could exist,

because there would be no will to live.

Hail the Earth, my mother, without which no food could be grown,

and so cause the will to live, to starve.

Hail the Wind, my grandmother, for she brings loving, life giving rain,

nourishing us as she nourishes our crops.

Hail the Fire, my grandfather, for the light, the warmth, the comfort he brings,

without which we be animals, not men.

Hail my parents and grandparents, without which,

not I, nor you, nor anyone else, could have existed.

Life gives life, which gives unto itself, a promise of new life.

Hail the Great Spirit, the Earth, the Wind, the Fire,

Praise my parents loudly, for they are your parents too.

Oh, Great Spirit, giver of my life, please accept this humble offering

of prayer, this offering of praise, this honest reverence of my love for you.

To All Native Peoples

"The Earth is sick and dying. The lands of the Huichol Indians,

hidden high in the remote Sierra Madre mountains

of northwestern Mexico, are dying. The forests are shrinking,

water is becoming scarce, and the animals are disappearing.

Mankind must be a steward of the Earth;

Caretakers for all that dwells upon it;

To be of one heart with all things.

Human beings must learn to share the tears of every living thing,

To feel in his heart the pain of the

wounded animal, each crushed blade of grass;

Mother Earth is our flesh; the rocks, our bones;

The rivers are the blood of our veins."

(Huichol Medicine) Man

Legend of the Cherokee Rose

When the Trail of Tears started in 1838, the mothers of the Cherokee were grieving and crying so much, they were unable to help their children survive the journey. The elders prayed for a sign that would lift the mother's spirits to give them strength. The next day, a beautiful rose began to grow where each of the mother's tears fell. The rose is white for their tears, a gold center represents the gold taken from Cherokee lands, and seven leaves on each stem for the seven Cherokee clans. The wild Cherokee Rose grows along the route of the Trail of Tears into eastern Oklahoma today.

The Way Of The Circle

The "Way of The Circle" is passed from generation to generation, from Native elders to the children in the form of stories, traditions, customs and teachings.

2) Remember that all things are connected.

3)All things have a purpose.

4)Honor others by treating them with kindness; always assume a guest is tired, cold or hungry. Provide them with the best of what you have to offer.
