| Misc. Notes |
Lars and Guro Haugse traveled to America April 24, 1883 with children, one of which was Nils, and Ingebjrg, sister to Lars.
Brooklyn Bridge was opened for traffic Sunday May 24, 1883. Father's folks landed 3 days before, or on Thursday May 21st. Dad [This is Joe Larsen Haugse] was not quite 3 years old. He was born Sept 19, 1880. The following day, Monday May 25, Uncle Nels, who was then about 21, took his little brother Joe by the hand and they walked out on the bridge; the crowds were too dense on opening day. Aunt Guro verified all this the summer of 1947 on a trip west. She told details of the parade and the spans of snow white horses with gorgeous carriages hauling dignitaries. She thought that was the way they did things in America, and it was not until later that day they learned this was a celebration in honor of the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge. |
