Misc. Notes
Mrs. Marie Hovland

The death angel has again visited one of our pioneer families. Mrs. Marie Hovland, wife of the late Hans Hovland was born in Winneshiek county, Iowa, on the twenty-fifth day of August, 1856. She was the daughter of Mikkel Valhus and Ingebor Valhus and was one of a family of nine children; five sons and four daughters, of this family the aged mother, the five brothers and the three sisters survive her.

In 1869 she was united in marriage with Hans Hovland, the husband having died eight years ago. Shortly after their marriage the young couple came to the farm one-half mile west of Fertile where the deceased lived until her death. She was the mother of eleven children of which three, namely Hannah, Julia and Mrs. Ida Halvorson preceded their parents in death. Those left to mourn the loss of their kind, loving and gracious mother are Mrs. Peter Grove of Hanlontown, Iowa, Mrs. Sophia Nordtvedt of Kansas City, Mo., John Hovland of Erskine, Minn., and Albert, Martin, Ole, Herman and Mrs. Henry Sheimo near Fertile, Iowa.

Mrs. Hovland has always been an active and industrious woman and has enjoyed almost perfect health until she was overtaken with a throat trouble which proved to be of a cancerous nature. When the seriousness of her case was realized Minneapolis physicians were consulted but no hope for recovery was given. Later she was taken to Clear Lake for osteopathic treatments where she passed away on Tuesday evening, in the sixty eighth year of her life. In her parting hours she found comfort and strength in the Word of God according to Jno (this researcher could not read the photo-copy, possibly a 3 or an 8) - 16. In this departed one honored by all who knew her, a loving mother and a worthy friend and neighbor has gone on before in the way appointed: "For it is appointed unto man once to die and after is the judgment" Could we hear her voice we should hear her plead, "Prepare to meet thy God; accept His free salvation today." Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, November 18, 1922 at the Elm Free Church. All her children but John were present, also many relatives from various points in Minnesota. Interment was made in the Elm cemetery. Photo-copy made from Irene Ronningen by Diane Marie Mack in 1993.
