Pre 1800
Michael (the convict) Fogarty's parents were James Fogarty and Judith Ryan. James was a farmer and we belive they lived in the hamlet of Burgess, Co.Tipperrary, as this is where Michael was born and baptised. We do not know for certain that Michael had any brothers or sisters, but is a fair guess to assume that he did, given the size of the typical irish catholic family of the day.
Based on the knowledge that Michael was most likely born in 1799 we can assume that his parents, James Fogarty and Judith Ryan were likely born circa 1770 and married circa 1790.
From evidence in Australia, where Michael lodged a request in ----- to bring out four children, we have deduced that Michael was married in Burgess and had four children prior to his transportation in 1828. It would also appear that Michael's irish wife had died prior to 1828, as she was not included on the migration request.
In September 1995, we visited the area where Michael was born. Whilst staying overnight with MaryO'Callaghan (nee Nealon - her grandmother was a Fogarty) we examined a copy of the:
1845 General Valuation of Ireland - Primary Valuations and Tennaments
County Tipperary - North Riding
Barony of Owney & Arra - Union of Nenagh
Parish of Burgessburg
It contained the following entries regarding Fogarty in the area:
