Two Reuben Finnells who claim Revolutionary War Service
in Virginia. Who
served?
Some
time ago it was discovered that I had in the Finnell
Family Archives records of two individual named Reuben Finnell
who claimed service in the Revolutionary War from Virginia. The problem is that
both are claiming the same service; Reuben Finnell of
Culpeper County on the DAR papers and Reuben Finney/Finnell of Orange Co in his Pension Applications. One for
many years was discounted because he was known as Reuben Finney in Kentucky.
Part of the problem is that only one of the individuals or widows made application for a
pension for their claimed service. Thus the reason for this
exercise. One it seems served from Orange County and the second from Culpeper County, Virginia. Following is a review of each
Reuben Finnell and his Family and a collection of
documentation relating to their Revolutionary War Service.

Chester Gap near Front Royal, VA and was a early
Methodist Minister and was said to have served in that capacity in the Americn Revolution 1776/1780.

REVOLUTIONRY WAR PENSION FILE for REUBEN
FINNEY
The following are items found and copied from
the Revolutionary War Pension file for Elizabeth Bourn Finnell,
widow of Reuben Finnell/Finney in the National
Archives. A complete xerox copy of
these records are in the Finnell Family
Archives.
The Pension File Jacket Reads Reuben Finney
Pvt of Cavalry Virginia Line for 2 years. The War
Department in 1838 said Reuben was a Dragoon in the Revolution.
This is to certify that during the years
1804,05 &06 I was well aquainted with Reuben Finnel in Jessamine County, Kentucky kept a school within
20 to 60 yrds of the house in which he lived - in the
intermission of school too great pleasure in going to his house and talking
with him, he was there confined to his bed with Rheumtic
pins and partially blind in the many conversations I held with him he told me
that early in the revolutionry
war he enlisted in the regulr service for three years
and served the term out and returned home which was in Orange, Virginia - and
soon after enlisted for and during the war - and went into the service again
and continued until its close - he also told me of many battles he had been in,
"the taking of Stony Point" I distinally
remember to [ ] of them and have
frequently been struck with the agreement of his narrtive
of the attacks and written history - he informed me of many other battles in
which he ws engaged and I think Monmouth and Brndywine among the number. I was acquained
with him from these years until the time of his death, he continued in the time
in the same helpless and blind condition. I think he died about the year 1813
or 14. I have been cquainted with the early acquintnce of Reuben Finney all my life and have never
heard any one of them conterdicted or doubt the
foresaid service of Reuben Finney, given under my hand this 14th day of
November 1838

County
On this 12th day of November 1838 personally
appeared before me the undersigned Justice of the Peace - Elizabeth Finney a
resident of Kentucky county of Jessamine, aged Seventy four years, who being
duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declartion
in order to obtain the benafits of the provision made
by the act of Congress passed July 7th 1835 entitled and act granting half pay
and pensions to certain widows. That she is the widow of
Reuben Finney who as she has been informed a private in the revolutionary war
from Orange County, State of Virginia by two different enlistments. The
first for no less than two years the second for and during the war both of
which enlistments he faithfully served out. She believes he was [ ] the two enlistments in various battles -
at the taking of Stony Point and she thinks at the battle of Brandywine,
Monmouth and many others - She further declares that she was married to the
said Reuben Finney at the house of the Father Henry Bourn, Orange County,
Virginia in the fall of the year or our Lord, 1784 and that the said Reuben
Finney, her husband aforesaid died in Jessamine County, Kentucky sometime in
the year 1813 or 1814 - Tht she was not married to him prior to his
leaving the service, but the marriage took place previous to the first day of
January 1794 and that she has remained a widow ever since the death of the said
Reuben Finney and is now a widow. She would further state that several yers previous to his death he was confined to his bed by
Rheumatic pain and loss of sight say 9 or twelve years. a part of which he ws supported by the poor laws of the county of Jessamine,
Kentucky that She has eight children and
[ ] from the said county was
interested to part in raising the said children during the decease and
confinement of their Father Reuben Finney.
Further that she the said Elizabeth Finney has
no means of support for her [ ] The relief granted by the [

Reuben Finnell
applied for and received bounty land warrent #1910
which was issued 19 Nov 1783 and is recorded in the records of the state of
Kentucky. The Virginia Bounty lands were for lands between the Scioto and
Little Miami Rivers in southwestern Ohio. Known as the
Virginia Military District of Ohio. Reuben Finnell
sold his warrent to Thomas Coleman, date not
recorded. Coleman sold the warrent to Andrew Ellison
on 10 Mar 1807. E. Ellison used the warrent to locate
70 acres of land survey #5342 and 8262 in the
Virginia District was located in a grassy hollow of the south part in
Pike Co, Ohio. The Finnell Warrent
#1910 was also used by David Bradford to locate 30 acres of Survey #5888 on
Brush Creek in Adams Co, Ohio
In the Harry L.Keller
Finnell Research papers are several letters written
in the late 1960's and early 1970's concerning the location of the burial place
for the Revolutionary Soldier REUBEN FINNELL. The information was from a Mrs Pritchard Finnell
descendant living in Front Royal, Virginia. She states that Reuben was buried
on his farm in "Hrmony Hollow", what was
later known as the "Old Remount Station". She said that at that time
the grave was not marked but she could walk up to the grave with no problems.
Several members of the Front Royal Finnell Family
have joined DAR and SAR on this line.
For what is was worth Reuben was a early Methodist Minister in Culpeper
County for many years and considered a Revolutionry
War Soldier. I visited the Cemetery in
the mid 1970's and again in the 1990's and the cemetery is still there with a
stone wall constructed around it, built possibly in the 1920's and contins only a few stones and several graves marked by
field stones. A transcript of the extant stones has been published in the
booklet Finnell Bible Records and Finnell Family Cemeteries, Volume I.
In a letter dated 24 Feb 1983 from Alton
Morrison of Front Royal, VA when asked to see what he could find on the burial
place for Reuben Finnell the following was his reply.
"from what I can learn Reuben Finnell
was buried near the entrance at the former Remont
Station in a Cemetery surrounded by a stone fence and no markers at the
grave."

Marriages
of Culpeper County, Virginia 1781 - 1815; by Catherine L. Knorr, 1954
Between March 1798 and Dec 1808 REUBEN
FINNELL, a Methodist minister preformed about 100 recorded marriages in Culpeper County, Virginia. He was a Methodist Minister in
the Front Royal area, because he was married he was
not a Circuit Rider.
In
a article from the Warren Sentinal
Front Royal, Virginia for Thursday 4 April 1940, the article titled FINNELL
"as was the call
of war sounded they sprang to arms. Reuben Finnell Minute Man and Regular John Finnell,
corporal in Capt Taylor's Company; William Finnell
corporal in Capt Francis Taylor's Co. On the payroll of the company from
28 January to 28 Feb 1777 we read that these soldiers were paid at the
rate of $6.66 per month, and generally
supplied their own arms.
The revolution at an end, the Finnells returned to their peaceful pastoral pursuits but
life beyond the Blue Ridge,... lured them, so that
early in the eighteenth Century we find the Finnells
owners of what is today the U S Remont Station."
