Notes from the Editor

Since the start of Loose Branches and Roots I have located and published records from 22 Finnell Family Bibles, including  the two in this issue. There are also 23 additional Finnell Bible Records published  the the booklet Finnell Family Cemeteries and Bible Records Volume I. Surprising that there are a total of 45 Finnell Family Bibles a lot more then I thought could be find when I first started this project. Many or most of these records are very important in that the original records are still in private hands and in the possession of people no longer even named Finnell. Having published these records we have made then available to a wider public even beyond the subscribers of this publication. Copies of the Loose Branches and Roots some Finnell Family Records has been deposited in several National scope Genealogical and Historical libraries, so that  the information can be used by many people who have Finnell Family interests now and in the future.

This issue also contains information and new documentation on several different Finnell Families, the  the entries have been redone to correct some very bad mistakes in identification. One family has now been divided into two different Families, though brothers they are sorted out and cleared up for the researcher. It is excitig and very interesting that interested individuals have come forward and shared important additional information and documents to make these corrections. A couple lines are extended with new documentation on the parentage of individuals that has been lost at some point. Copies of old pictures are also sent to the Editor  showing some exciting sites and articles that are Family treasures. The most exciting part of this is that we

see a record of these items how they looked and how they are a part of the Family History. We are still looking forward to finding the oldest Finnell Family Member photographed. Next issue will contain a list of those in the running.

These interesting discoveries will interest the reader and friends in the wide origin and location of the surname Finnell as found in America. Some of this from the 1900 Federal Census and additional notes form Harry L.Keller papers. I have also been interested in the number of Black Finnell families found in the 1880 and 1900  Census  in Kentucky. They deserve to be recorded and researched also and I have added files in the Archives for them as I find them, hoping that it will be of some help to a future researcher.

There may be about one or two more issues of Couisn's Connections left from  the Harry Keller files to be used. I felt these would be of interest to every one. The fact that Mr Keller contacted people through out the 1940  to 1960's he was able to get responses from many individual now long gone. The important point to remember now is that these questionnaires have now provided clues and connections that were once lost. One family member was able to connect with a family long lost  to him. One other provided a link to assist in sorting out the family connections and extending the generations back a couple more generations. In providing these for publication I made no effort to make any additions to the lineage from the files, but left them as they submitted the original.

I wish each of you the best for the new year and hope that you will have great success this coming year. I enjoy all the information and documents shared with with me over the past years.

An Interesting Proposal

My proposal to the question of the parentage of Loretta Estelle Finnell Ruff:. I believe that she is the daughter of  James J. [I.] Finnell and the grand daughter of Asa King Finnell.

JAMES J. [I.] Finnell; b. 1838, MO; d. after 1875, possibly in Kansas; m.5 Sep 1860 in Howard Co, MO to Elizabeth Markland (b.1844; d.2 May 1873, age 29yrs 10mo 22dy, bur. Armstrong Old Chapel Cemetery, the daughter of Matthew & Loretta (Harvey) Markland); m/2 on 20 Mar 1875 to Missouri Frances Botts (b.12 Mar 1858, Chariton Co, MO)  Some time after 1875/76 James went west to teach school for a year and never returned and was believed he died or was murdered.

CHILDREN:

JOHN B. FINNELL; b.1862; d.20 Feb 1864; age 2yrs 8mo 14dys, bur. Armstrong Old Chapel Cemetery

WILLIAM G. FINNELL; b.1866; d.5 Jun 1866; age 3mos 5dys, bur. Armstrong Old Chapel Cemetery.

LORETTA ESTELLE FINNELL; b.13 Apr 1868, Howard Co, MO; d.8 Dec 1850, NY; m. 29 Apr 1883 to Jacob H. Ruff

child by second marriage

ASA GRANVILLE FINNELL; b.6 Apr 1876 d,.5 Feb 1961, Moberly, MO; m/1 to Bertie Elgin Martin (b.5 Oct 1939); m.2 to Alice Kennedy

To support this proposal at this time is the following evidence:

At some time after 1950 a grand daughter  wrote a Journal in which is contained a section on the life of Loretta Estelle Finnell. In part the story goes as follows:  Her mother died when she was very young and her father gave her to the care of two aunts to raise. The father then left the area of Armstrong MO and was not heard from again. At the age of about 15 she was married to Jacob H. Ruff after the exchange of some money. Loretta and Jacob Ruff then returned to Jacobs home in New York State where she raised a family.

The marriage record [Book 1 Page 253] is in the Howard County Court House as is as follows: Loretta E. Finnell of Armstrong married to Jacob H. Ruff of Armstrong on 29 Apr 1883 by Rev C. A. Yersin. A.C. Finnell , Guardian gives his consent.

In the Harry Keller Files is a old genealogy blank [questionnaire] dated prior to 1965, a response from a Dorothea Francis Gordon. She makes reference that her Great Grandfather was James Finnell who about 1873 went away from Armstrong, MO and was never heard from again. In a letter to Harry Keller dated 15 Nov 1968 she wrote in part: "My Grandmother spoke often of her childhood in Missouri. She and her two brothers were given to Judge Mathew Markland by James Finnell [her father] on the death of their Mother, Elizabeth Markland Finnell. The story about him was that he left to go on a gold seeking trip to California. No one ever heard from him after this. I believe this was right after his wife died in May 1879."

In the 1880 Federal Census of Armstrong, Howard Co, MO, Loretta is listed as a daughter in the household of Alva and Francis Finnell.

FINNELL, Avle     age39     b. MO     Farmer

Francis                       35           MO      wife

Adolphus                  17           MO      son

Willard                       14           MO      son

Luretta                       10           MO      dau

Ruff, Jacob                                21           NY       wagon maker

Grisham, Laurence                   21           MO      Carpenter

A.C. Finnell listed on the Marriage Record is also the same as Alva C. Finnell and also Aaron Campbell [Cam] Finnell the son of Elijah Finnell.  The James M. Finnell, b.1844 is a brother of A.C. and as late as 1870 was still living with his father Elijah and it appears he never married, so he is ruled out as the Father of Loretta.

The Finnell burial in the Armstrong Old Chapel Cemetery, Armstrong, MO contains the following Finnell stones:

FINNELL, Alva C. [A.C.]; d.10 Jan 1895; aged 53yrs 2mo 12dys

Elizabeth, wife of James I.; d.2 May 1873; age 29yrs 10mo 22dys

William G.; son of James I & E.R.; d.5 Jun 1866; age 3m5d

John B.; son of James I & E.R.; d.20 Feb 1864; aged 2yrs,8mo 14d

John H., son of A.K.& Emily; b.20 Sep 1836; d.2 Dec 1864

Elijah, d.10 Feb 1890; d.age 84yrs 7mo 23dys

Asa K.; d.20 Feb 1874; age 65yrs 28dys

Emily S.; wife of A.K.; d.3 Jan 1873; aged 58yrs 9mo

Jonathan; d.12 Jan 1878; aged 74yrs 3m 19d

The Armstrong Missouri HEROLD newspaper dated 17 Jan 1890 contains a notice of the death of Elijah Finnell and that he was the father of James and Cam Finnell

There are three marriages in Howard County, Missouri that are of interest here.

James Finnell m. Elizabeth Markland 5 Sep 1860 by Rev B. F. Johnson, M E Church S.

Sarah Ann Finnell m. Mathew Markland 1 Apr 1861 by Wm H. Morris

Alva C. Finnell m. Francis A. Markland 15 May 1867 by Rev J.W. Ferrill.  Elizabeth and Francis are sisters to Mathew and the three are children of Mathew & Loretta Harvey Markland. Sarah and James are the Children of Asa K. Finnell and Alva is the son of Elijah Finnell.  A.C. and James would have been Finnell Cousins and also brother in laws through their wives. The fact that they all seem to have had some connection to Armstrong Old Chapel Cemetery there is a connection between the Finnell and Markland Families.

I believe that Loretta Finnell was listed in the Alva Finnell Household because A.C. was her guardian and their because of the relationship of the Mothers and to some degree the connections of the Finnell Family. Though not proof the fact that Loretta has the same given name as the alleged Grandmother, Loretta Harvey Markland can be a important clue to a possibe clue to this connection. This is a interesting proposal and more evidence and proofs need to be found to prove the point and establish the connection.

DEATH CLAIMS ONE of the BUILDERS of the STATE

JOHN FINNELL of Napa County, Father of Attorney BUSH FINNELL of this City, passes away after an eventful career.

JOHN W. FINNELL, one of the men who helped to make California great, died yesterday morning at Dr Burke's sanitarium, Napa County. Born near Lexington, KY, in 1830, he was married there in 1848 to Miss Elizabeth Stevenson. After his marriage he struck out into Missouri, settling near St Joseph. But in 1857 the feeling of unrest and adventure came over him and he marched on across the plains to the then new land of California.

In this State he settled first in Berryessa Valley, Napa county, and he made Napa county his home to the end, filling the office of Supervisor in the early 70's and helping to establish a bank in Napa City. He brought part of the Yount grant near Yountville for his home place. In 1879 he leased the great Welsh grant of 22,000 acres in Colusa county and held the lease until his death. In 1880 he purchased the Thomas grant of 22,999 acres he had leased in Tehama county, and that fine principality was part of his holding when he died.

He made a notable success of farming and stock raising and became known as one of the far-sighted and clear-headed men of the state, his word being accepted as absolute verity in all business transactions. He had long been as active Mason, member of Yount Lodge in Napa City, and this lodge is to conduct his funeral at 2 o'clock tomarrow afternoon in Napa. [1905]

Eleven children blessed the wedding of JOHN FINNELL and Elizabeth Stevenson == Six boys and five girls. Six sons and two daughters survive their father. An impressive feature of the funeral will be the  appearance of all six stalwart sons as pallbearers, paying the last triute to a father who had been so much to them. Three sons are FOUNTAIN FINNELL of Corning, SIMPSON FINNELL of Tehama, WILLIAMSON FINNELL of Napa, JOHN FINNELL, Jr of Red Bluff, James FINNELL of Chico and BUSH FINNELL, the widely known attorney of San Francisco. The surviving daughters are Mrs W.G. Uridge of Fresno and Mrs R.B.Safford of Berkeley. The cause of Mr Finnell's death was heart failure supericduced by a disorder of the kidneys. Few Men had more to do with the upbuilding of the state or hold a higher place in the affections of their neighbors.

A SPECIAL FAMILY TREASURE

A BENJAMIN FINNELL, son of Benjamin Finnell and and Sarah Carter Sleet and sister of Lucy N. Finnell Nall, passed down a special family Treasure to the Family. During the War of 1812 he killed a Indian on the Tems River in Kentucky, and took his tomahawk. This was a very  unusual tomahawk which must have been supplied to the chief by the French who were vying with the British for all the unsettled territory east of the Mississippi River.

The handle is wood and has a small hollow from end to end, in order to draw smoke from the hollow nail striker head which is the pipe bowl. The blade is sharp and seems to be brasslike or a copper or brass alloy. Near the hatchet head on the blade side of the handle are 8 or 10 small notches; carved by the indian owner, one notch for each enemy killed. The end of the handle held by the  owner is sloped to a small point, suitable to place between the lips for smoking.

A diagonial design stamped or carved into the wooden handle in several places. These designs were evidently decorative, but more likely to enable the owner to secure a firmer grip on a smooth and polished surface. The total length is about 10 to 20 inches, and has a weighted and machines metal collar in the eye of the tamahawk. The weight in the eye plus balanced construction made this weapon easy to throw accurately at a target.

THREE PHOTOGRAPHS are IDENTIFIED

In June 2002 I received a note and the originals of three old pre 1900 Cabinet photographs. The photographs were taken in the studio of [George W.] Weaver Brothers of Covington, Kentucky. The original photographs were obtained in a box of junk from a rummage sale in Washington state and sent to the Finnell Family Archives.

Two of the photographs contained pencil notes on the reverse ie: one Joe Finnell and Sam Finnell and on one of the others just send to Mrs Finnell. Copies of the photographs were sent to three Finnell Cousins with ties to the Boone / Kenton County, Kentucky area. One cousin replied that they appeared to be the children of Joseph C. Finnell named Joseph C. Jr and Samuel C. Finnell but with out an vital data.

A Search of the 1900 Federal Census of Kenton County, Kentucky provided some needed additional data.  The three photographs are as follows:

Photo 1 what appears to be a photograph of Joseph C. Finnell, Sr

Photo 2 of Joseph C, Jr and Samuel C. Finnell taken some time prior to 1890.

Photo 3  appears to be a childs photo of a unnamed sibling, the one marked "send to Mrs Finnell".  Note these were the only Covington photographs when it was purchased and the reason they are all sent to The Finnell Family Archives.

The following is the information we have on the Family.

JOSEPH C. FINNELL, son of John W. and Elizabeth Tureman FINNELL; b.4 Mar 1854, Covington, KY; d.14 Feb 1911, Cincinnati, OH, buried Highland Cemetery, Covington, KY; m. 1883 to Mamie H. Cochran. In 1900 Joseph Sr was occupied as U S Court Clerk. They were recorded as having 4 children but only two living. The two chidren found in the 1900 Census are.

JOSEPH C. FINNELL, Jr; b. Jun 1885, Covington, Kenton Co, KY

THOSE OTHER FINNELL / FINNEL'S

Over the past few weeks I have been looking at the 1900 Federal Census for various Finnell Families through out the United States. It was surprising to discover that the State of Michigan listed four Finnell Families, and none of these are connected to our Finnell Family Branch. I have always been aware of the alleged Finnell Irish Connection, but I was not aware of any Russian or Finnish possibilities.

Taking into consideration the 1900 Census is a century old and the contined migration of families during these past years and all across the United States it is not hard to see how all these Families can be confused and  mixed up. Though it may cause some confusion it makes the search the more exciting.

The following is a abstract of the records from Michigan for your information:

In the Harry L. Keller files is a note form a letter written in  Jan 1966 from a Vera A. Finnell of Yakima, WA that stated the following: Her parents came to America and lived in Ludington, Mich. When they arrived her Father and his brother who's name was Mattson changed their surname to FINNELL because there were too many Mattson in America.  Wonder why they picked FINNELL?

ONE MORE BRANCH

Some time before 1955 Colonel Woolsey Finnell, Sr [1866-1955] compiled and published a short genealogy of his branch of the Finnell Family, part of a larger genealogy titled; Reverend Daniel Brown of Culpeper County, Virginia and Allied Families Webster, Finnell, McCain, Pemberton. A total of 72 pages with some 23 pages containing the information on the Finnell Family descendants of Charles and Nancy Finnell from Virginia to Georgia and; later Alabama amd Mississippi. The booklet is very hard to find any more and my copy was obtained many years ago and it contains many corrections and additions in the margins, these are not included here.

The Harry L. Keller papers also has a file on this Family, mainly a partial typescript of Col Finnell's genealogy and some correspondence dealing with a couple lines absent form the original publication. The Keller files does have some imporant information and additions that are going to be made available here. Any one interested or wishing a copy of the original 23 pages section on the Finnrell Data and a every name index please contact the editor. The cost for the copy and postage will be $5.00.
