INTRODUCTION

On my visit to Arizona in January 1999 I had the
opportunity to visit the Library for the Sun City
Genealogical Society [Now known as West Valley
Genealogy Society] Library in Sun City, Az. After my
return to Minnesota, they contacted me to ask if I was
interested in a sizeable collection of Finnell Research
Papers they had been given some time ago. The research
collection was compiled over many years by William and
Patricia Anderson Malone of Sun City, AZ. I was not
aware of the papers during my earlier visit and had not
seen them. In March 1999 the Librarian wrote me to ask
if I was interested in these papers, as the Library
was, at that time, in the process of deaccessioning them
and other like collections they had. The papers were
sent to me for the price of shipping them to Minnesota.
The collection consists of many Family group
sheets with back up materials, notes and abstracts for
about 2 linear feet of Records. Also were include some
files for the Malone Family and Anderson Family
including some photographs. This is a very valuable
addition to the Finnell Family Archives. A number of
items in this issues are a result of the papers in that
collection.
Contact has also been made with a number of newly
found Finnell Cousins and Family Members. The results
are a wealth of new data and we have been able to solve
a couple of "where do these Finnell's fit in" questions.
I want to thank these new cousins for their sharing
with me and also with you some of their family records.
One of the most interesting things we can find are
copies of Old Bible Records, Newspaper or Historical
clippings, letters to and from relatives. These pages
contain several examples of these types of records. Many
of the Research files also contain abstracts of Local
and County Records of Finnell Records. These can
provide a very valuable clue or information that I hope
to continue to share with as many Finnell Cousins as
possible. I want to again thank every one who has been
so good about sharing with me their individual Family
records and treasurers.
One of the reasons this issue is late this year is
that most of December through early February I was ill.
In fact most of January into February it was almost
impossible for me to read or even watch TV, my eyesight
had been affected badly. In Mid January I discovered
that I had Type II diabetes. I am now feeling better
and getting my life back under control and changing a
number of old habits. I will be able to control it with
medication, diet and exercise. The results are some
major changes in my life style and habits. The next
couple of issues are being worked on and should be out in
a more timely manner.
Thank you for your continued support and
interest in the preservation of the Finnell Family
History.

Arthur Louis Finnell

"Your Great Grandfather [John H. W. Finnell] told
me years ago that he was part Indian, what parent
he didn't say or of what tribe."
"As to how much of an Indian the Finnell's were,
all I know I heard my Step Father to say he was
     part Indian"
Any one else heard this one let the Editor know. Its

          BOUNTY LAND WARRANT

REUBEN FINNELL, who served in the Revolutionary
War 1 Aug 1777 to 1 Aug 1779, was issued Land-Office
Military Warrent No. 1910 for service in the Virginia
Continental Line. The original copy of this land
warrant is among the records in the Office of the
Secretary of State of the Commonwealth of Kentucky in
Frankfort.
Bounty-Land acts, beginning with that of 16 Sep
1776 granted lands to veterans of army service,
volunteers of state militia or others who rendered
service on behalf of the United States. This covered
service rendered between the time of the Revolutionary
War and prior to passage of the Act of 1855. Bounty-land
laws served as inducement to foster enlistments
and discourage desertions or resignations of army duty.
Relatively few veterans applied for regular pensions,
but very few refused or failed to apply for and receive
a bounty-land warrant, As in the case of the pension
certificate, the warrant was a negotiable instrument,
and many warrants were sold for their ready cash value
to land speculators.
The Virginia Military Lands, in southwestern Ohio
between the Scioto and Little Miami Rivers, were
retained by Virginia for the purpose of satisfying the
claims of Virginias on the basis of service in the
Continental line of that state. Soldiers were entitled
to acerage in proporation to their military rank --
1100 acres for a general with three years' service, 100
acres for a private with three years' service--- with
varying amounts for ranks between. Originally, the
warrants were issued for land on the south side of the
Green River in Kentucky. As a result of an agreement
between Virginia and the United States, Virginia
agreeded to cede its western lands to the United
States; and Congress, by an act approved 9 June 1794,
provided in effect that holders of Virginia Continental
Line Warrants could surrender their warrents for tracts
of land in a specific area in the Northwest Territory.
This area, between the Scioto and Little Miami Rivers,
became known as the Virginia Military District of Ohio.
     Thus Reuben Finnell's original land
warrant, issued 19 Nov 1783 is among the records of the
Secretary of the State of Kentucky, but his land was in
the Virginia Military District of Ohio. Reuben
Finnell held his warrant for a time and then sold
it to Thomas Coleman, date not recorded. Coleman sold
the warrant for the 70 acres to Andrew Ellison on 10
Mar 1807. This warrant was used by E. Ellison to locate
the 70 acres of land (Survey Nos 5342 and 8262 in the
Virginia Military District). It was situated in a
grassy hollow of the South Fort in Pike County, Ohio.
The FINNELL Warrant No. 1910 was also used by
David Bradford to locate 30 Acres of land (survey
No.5888) on Brush Creek in Adams County, Ohio.
[Interesting to know what became of these warrants over
the years]

               A FAMILY TRADITION

The Father of Merlin Finnell. Rev Evander Finnell
in his travels heard a number of times the story that
our Finnell family were neighbors of the Ancestors of
George Washington. The following Deed gives some
credence to this tradition.
The Old Rappahannock County Virginia deed dated 29
Sept 1664 where William Moss and Bridgett, his wife of
Rappahannock County sold unto JOHN FENNELL and
Frances, his wife of the same County a parcel of land
containing 50 acres. This fifty acres was a part of the
original patant of 1060 acres to Moss beginning at a
gum tree on the corner of Mr James Williamson's land
and Stower Creek.
This Mr James Williamson was the same one who
imported the 23 persons to Virginia in May 1650 that
included John Fennell.
James Williamson was a man of property and a
Justice of the Old Rappahannock Court who resided at
Cobban Park near Warsaw. Williamson had a daughter who
married William Bell of Lancaster County, an ancestor
of George Washington.
In a 3 Nov 1681 Old Rappahannock County, Virginia
deed JOHN FENNELL and Frances, his wife sold
this 50 acres they had purchased of William and
Bridgett Moss for the purpose of the erection of the
second court house and jail. They received 12 thousand
pounds of Tobacco for the land. John had purchased the
property in 1664 when he was 35 years old and was 52
years old when he sold it to the County. The land was
located in Sittingbourne Parish.

In a letter from Allan T. Finnell a lawyer in

With Our Thanks

Merlin Finnell of Monticello, Indiana for many years
with his wife Eva collected and recorded the Finnell
Family History. Copies of all their materials have been
deposited in the Fort Wayne Allen County Public
Libraray. In addition many of the Family also received
over the years copies of their research for our files.
We thank them for all the years of work and many trips
to find and record the Family records

THE HISTORIC SIMPSON FINNELL RANCH
In part from a article by Mrs Otto Rehse.

The Finnell family once owned a section of Orland
Project land, which cost $8.960., but nobody could pay
that now -- It had to be in "Gold Coin of the United
Stats of America." It has been illegal to own gold
coins since 1933.
Actually, none of the members of the Family
remember the parcel of land until the deed was
discovered among the old papers cleared out of the
Finnell ranch house near Newville. That ranch was
recently sold. The deed was from the Central Pacific
Railroad, which got many sections of Land as a
inducement to build the road and open up the country.
It was signed by Charles W. Crocker, one of the "Big
Four" which included also Mark Hopkins, Leland Stanford
and Collis P. Huntington. They were the ones who built
the line from San Francisco to Promontory Point,Utah,
where it was met by the Union Pacific, Centeal Pacific
also built the lines up to Sacramento Southeern
Pacific.
In case you are interested in the present value of
the $8,960. parcel purchased 11 Nov 1881, it was
bounded on the South by the Wyo Road, on the west by
Summit Ave., on the east by the road going north from
Lake School and on the north by Magnolia Avenue. Among
ranch houses now located on the section are those of
Bella Gilmore, Mike Kegley, Julius Jess, Ed Urban and
Harry Higginbotham, and the Peter Kasak ranch.

FINNELL RANCH sold to Rehse Brothers
[Article in the Orland Unit Register]
One of the area's most historic land holdings has
been sold by heirs of the late Simpson Finnell, Sr to
Alvin, Harry and Vernon Rehse of Orland. Papers in the
deal were signed over the weekend. The place includes
9,500 acres of farming and range land in the Newville
area. Price was not announced, but it is said to be
over $900,000.
Possession is the be given on 1 Sept, and Vernon
Rehse plans to occupy the Large house on the property.
He and his family have been living on the Reed ranch in
the Kirkwood area. This place is in an estate and is
likely to be sold, which would have terminated the
lease, and this led to the deal concluded for the
Finnell property.
The Finnell ranch, though large is only a portain
of what at one time was an empire. Prior to the
depression of the 1930's Simpson Finnell, Sr had a
total of 48,000 acres of land most of it devoted to
beef cattle raising. Finnell was Tehama County's
largest stockman, and it is related that he paid at one
time a $10,000 bill for freight alone on cattle be
brought in from Texas to stock his ranches.
In addition to the 9,500 acre ranch sold to the
Rehses, the Finnell holdings at that time included the
present Quiet Hills Ranch of C.S. Wheeler, additions it
to the east a large area around Patton in the Coast
Range west of Pask___ and a large ranch in Napa County
near Yountville.
History of the holdings dates back to the earliest
days of the state. The Finnell family originally came
to California from Missouri by covered wagon in 1855
and part of the ranch had been in the family ever since
that time. The other portion was known for years as the
Shelton ranch, which was homesteaded by Mrs Finnell
Sr's parents in 1887, and purchased by Mrs Finnell from
her mother in 1912 and added to the other holdings. It
included part of the old Newville Townsite, where the
Shelton home was located.
The sellers of the property are the children of
the late Mr and Mrs Simpson Finnell, Sr.; Mrs Frank A
Harrington of Orland; Mrs John Rosson, Piedmont; Mrs
Rollo Wheeler, San Francisco and Simpson Finnell Jr,
San Jose.

Historic Finnell Ranch Home Burned to the
ground 8 Jan 1967.
The home was build by the late Simpson Finnell Sr,
just prior to 1910, when he purchased the ranch and
moved his family there from Tehama, where he had
operated the Thomas Grant. That was one of the original
Mexican grants and included Richfield, the El Camino
and other large acerage.
At Newville, Finnell developed one of the state's
largest cattle operations and the largest in Tahama
County. At one time he held over 50,000 acres of land,
including the home place at Newville, which was devoted
to farming and stock raising, and other land in the
mountains used for range.
The home place, of close to 10,000 acres, was held
in the Finnell Family until its sale to the Rehses a
few years ago. The flames destroyed the eight bedroom
residence.
