Introduction

Issue Number 9 is at last ready to go to the copy
center and off to you the readers. I hope you will enjoy
these pages and find them of interest.
This issue contains several pages of corrections
and additions to earlier entries. Several are for
information from newly found Cousins who have
kindly shared this family information with me and with
you. This sort of material helps build archives
collection on each of these families and records he
Family story more completely.
It is my hope that I am able to provide a wide
range of materials that will keep the interest of every
one and answer Family questions about our Ancestry.
There are many branches to the Finnell Tree and we hope
to be able to provide some information on as many
branches as possible.
The Finnell Web page has received a number of
interesting updates, queries and response from
individuals. The new reply page has helped top make
contact with many new cousins and provided many new
bits of Family lore. It has even resulted in a couple
new family bibles being located.
During a visit to Lexington, KY earlier this month
I was asked if their was any thought to having a
Finnell Week-End next summer. The place suggested was
in the area of the Cincinnati, OH airport. The Finnell
Family Week-end wood be a chance for many Family
members to come together and share information, show of
some family artificats and treasurers and meet other
family members. If any one is interested or has any
questions or suggestions please let me know.
I would also suggest reading the book How the
West Was Lost: The Transformation of Kentucky from
Daniel Boone to Henry Clay; by Stephen Aron; Johns
Hopkins University Press; 1996. I picked up a soft
cover copy in the Louisville, KY airport. A very
interesting and enjoyable look at Kentucky during the
times some of the Finnell and allied families came to
and settled in Kentucky.
Please enjoy these pages and as always your
comments and suggestions are always welcomed. Tell
others about this publication as I would like to expand
the readership. For only $5.00 per issue where else can
you find such a deal. Look for Issue #10 some time in
early 2000.
Best wishes to you and your family for the 1999
Holiday Season

Arthur Louis Finnell

SIMPSON FINNELL

News came Saturday evening that SIMPSON FINNELL
had just died suddenly and unexpectedly while sitting
in his chair at his home about 5 miles east of the
city.
Mr Finnell may be classed among the pioneers of
this section. He came from California in the early
seventies to which state he migrated from Virginia a
few years previous. On his advent here he invested
largely in some of the best land of this section at a
low price. His energy, perserverance, economy and good
judgement soon brought him to the foremost rank in
agriculture pursuits. He devoted much of his time an
capital to feeding cattle and hogs and in that line was
excelled in numbers fed and shipped by D. Rankin only
in the state of Iowa and Missouri.
He raised a large family of sons and daughters who
are equally industrious and economical and by their
combined efforts accoumulated a large amount of farm
property which comprises some of the most valuable
farms in the country. Mr Finnell's credit amoung the
banks of the county is such that he had little trouble
getting what he wanted when he desided to feed several
1000 or buy new farm.
Mrs Finnell who was a model wife and mother
preceded him to the better land several years ago and
was buried in Mt Olive cemetery.
At the time of his death he had arrived at the
ripe old age of 83years, 8 months and 27 days. The
funeral services were held at the home Wedensday at 2
o'clock by Rev John Zuck and the remains interred in
the Finnell lot by the side of his wife

     DELIA WRIGHT FINNELL

In October 1969 I placed a genealogical query in
Hawkeye Heritage the publication of the Iowa
Genealogical Society asking for information on the
death of a Delia Finnell. I received in reply a letter
from Mrs Franklin Lillie of Ladora, Iowa. She had
photographed in May 1967 this old tombstone for a
Delia/wife of/ W. Finnell/Died/Oct 15, 187[-]/ Aged
56y 1mo. The stone was broken and the last number
of the year could not be read. The stone was a step or
part of a walk at the Victor, Iowa Train Depot, by
after 1969 the stone and others there had been lost.
How interesting that Mrs Lillie photographed the stone
and was willing to share it with others.
     Delia Wright was born about
Sept 1823 in Virginia and married
27 Oct 1843 to Charles W. Finnell,
by Linus Gilbert, a Baptist
minister in Coshocton County, Ohio.
The names of her parents are not
known for sure at this time. [See print version
Charles W. Finnell was the son of for the photographs
Thomas and Nancy Compton Finnell referred to here.]
and came to Coshocton County, Ohio
from Virginia in 1830/31. Delia is
believed buried in a small cemetery
near Guernsey, Iowa where two of
her grandsons are buried. [see
issue #8]
It is believed that the stone was ordered and when
it arrived the family refused it as the stone was wrong
[?] should be C.W. Finnell not W. Finnell. Or the stone
arrived C.O.D. and no one could afford it and it was
never picked up.
Charles W. Finnell and wife Delia are found in the

                  Some Bits and Pieces

In our search for Family materials we some times
come across interesting items. One I found a while ago
in the Historical Society of Wisconsin Library. The
Library contains one issue of the Newspaper American
Sentinel published in Georgetown, KY on Friday 11
April 1828 [No 2 Vol VI whole number 262] The publisher
was N. L. FINNELL [Nimrod L. FINNELL] son of John
Finnell and Cathy Sury. Ninrod b. 1799, VA; d.8 Dec
1850; m. 17 Aug 1815 to Eliza Reilly in Clark Co, KY.
They had one son: John W. FINNELL (see page 14 issue
#6, 1998)
Nimrod L. Finnell was also involved in the
publication of the Lexington Observer in
Lexington, KY and the Licking Valley Register
one of the first major newspapers in Northern Kentucky.
I am in the process of trying to find a complete
set of these newspapers and see if they may contain
some bits of other Finnell family data. I would wonder
if any of the area newspapers would not have carried a
notice of the death of Nimrod L. Finnell on 8 Dec 1850.
If one is extant I would like to have a copy for the
files.

               Thomas Finnell Land Record

In about 1830/31 Thomas Finnell with his wife,
Nancy Compton Finnell came to Coshocton Co, OH from
Front Royal, VA. They came to Ohio with members of the
Compton Family and many settled just west of the Canal
Town of Roscoe, OH in Jackson Township.
Of all the families who came with Thomas he was
the only one to purchase land directrly from the
Government. In 1835 he received his patent to the 80
acres he purchased in the US Military District, set
aside to settle Virginia Military Bounty Claims. I
wondere if part of this was due Reuben Finnell for his
Revolutionary Service in Virginia. Thomas was one of
the younger sons of Reuben Finnell and Sarah Ashford
Mitchell Finnell.
On the next page of the printed version is a
copy of this patent from the General Land Office.
An interesting document giving him title to this
property. This is where the Finnell Cemetery is located
in Jackson TWP Coshocton County, Ohio

Also note that Thomas Finnell first appears on
the 1929 Shenandoah Co, VA Personal Property Tax List.

This also appears to be the same Thomas Finnell who

The 1830 Federal Census for Shenandoah Co, VA
